Spotlight of the Week
To really understand how volume works, grade 8 students in Ms. Jepson's used real objects like a cylinder, cone, and sphere. By filling the shapes with water, they could see how much space each one occupied. This allowed them to connect the abstract formulas to something tangible. They explored how the height, radius, and base of each shape impact its volume in a fun, interactive way.
Students learned that the volume of a cylinder is based on the area of its circular base and how tall the cylinder is. For a cone, it’s similar—but because the shape tapers, it’s only one-third of the volume of a cylinder with the same base and height. And with spheres, they discovered that the formula for volume involves pi and the cube of the radius—an exciting (and a bit magical) connection to how these perfect, round shapes take up space!
The hands-on experience didn’t stop at exploring the shapes. After experimenting with water and observing the relationships, students applied the formulas to solve real-world problems in their notebooks. This helped them practice and gave them a deeper appreciation of how geometry works in the world around them.
At Daley Middle School, we believe that learning math is about more than just memorizing formulas—it’s about truly understanding the concepts and making connections. This hands-on lesson in volume was a great way to make that happen, and we’re excited to see how our students continue to build on this foundation.

Where is the bus? Check the spreadsheet!
The Lowell Public Schools Transportation Department has added a live spreadsheet to its webpage that indicates in the AM or PM if a school bus (grades K-8) is running late and by how long. Check it out today: https://www.lowell.k12.ma.us/Page/5990
