New Pedestrian Crossover by BPS - Signage Beginning May 6th
The school crossing on Hudson Drive in front of Bayridge Public School is being upgraded to a new pedestrian crossing. The new crossing is called a "Pedestrian Crossover", or "crossover", for short.
Upgrading a school crossing to a crossover means that drivers are required to stop for pedestrians who are crossing at all hours of the day – not just when the school crossing guard is present. The school crossing guard will remain in place at this location before and after school, with the upgrades providing greater visibility and improving safety at the crossing.
Crossovers are marked "ladder" crosswalks where vehicles must yield to pedestrians crossing the road. They are identified by specific signs and pavement markings (triangles that look like “sharks’ teeth”) showing where drivers must stop.
The school crossing signage will be replaced with new signage to ensure it is clear to drivers that the crossing functions at all hours of the day, consistent with other crossover locations across the city. Other warning signage, speed limit reductions, and Community Safety Zone signage will remain in place.
Here are some tips for pedestrians and drivers using the new crossover:
Drivers:
Watch for pedestrians and be prepared to stop
Stop behind the yield line
Wait until pedestrians have completely crossed the road before proceeding
Pedestrians:
Show drivers that you want to cross before entering the crosswalk
Cross only when traffic has come to a complete stop
Try to make eye contact with the driver
If you have any questions, you can reach out to us at contactus@cityofkingston.ca, or visit the City of Kingston Pedestrian Infrastructure webpage for more information.
