THANK YOU MESSAGE & WINTER BREAK REMINDER
As we prepare for winter break, we want to take this time to thank you for your partnership and for selecting GWC for your child(ren)'s education. It is our privilege and honor to serve your scholar(s) and family. Our scholars and staff have had a great first semester filled with lots of growth and learning. We remain committed to the continuous growth of every scholar, and we ask that you continue this journey with us through partnerships. The staff of GWC wishes you all a wonderful, safe, restful winter break. We look forward to seeing you in 2025!
As a friendly reminder, December 20th is our last day of school before winter break. Students will return to school on Tuesday, January 7th!

PTA ANNOUNCEMENT
We are happy to report that our PTA is in the process of being reformed! With that, we MUST establish a board. We desire your partnership and ask that you consider serving in one of the positions listed below!
Please find more details below as to how you can serve on the board and/or consider joining, as a member, us as we embark on this journey. Together, we can make a difference!
PTA BOARD POSITIONS
Board must have:
President
Vice President
Secretary
Treasurer
*The 16th District will assist in the selection of the Board. The school is NOT involved in this process. Therefore, please email Susan Voglesong, at susan@16thdistrictpta.org, with your inquiries or interest.
JOIN OUR PTA TODAY
Please consider joining our PTA, membership cost is $5, by following the link below. Keep in mind that membership is an annual renewal; therefore, if you were a member before, you will need to join again. Our goal is to have at least 110 of our families join our PTA; this includes all adults in the household. Let's meet this goal and establish a strong home/school partnership!
COLD WEATHER & RECESS
As winter settles in, we wanted to send out a few reminders as it relates to outdoor recess:
- Please make sure scholars wear layers
- Send in a jacket with your scholar
- Send in any gloves, hats, scarf, etc. you wish your scholar to wear while outdoors
- Wear enclosed shoes to keep feet warm and more stable on surfaces
Staff will make decisions for recess based on multiple factors. Conditions that will be considered are as follows:
- Temperature
- Wind Chill
- Age of Students
- Length of time outdoors
- Adequacy of clothing of the children
- Condition of the playground or grounds
Scholars will NOT be outside when it is below 32 degrees; however, we will also factor in wind chill (using the "feels like" on weather apps/forecasts). Other considerations are ice, snow, rain surfaces, etc. where the risk of falling increases!
Note: The protective surfacing/mulch on our playgrounds freezes at 32°. Therefore, for the safety of the students, Risk Management recommends not to play on the composite play structures, swings or any play equipment where a child could fall from an elevated surface onto the frozen protective surfacing. The frozen mulch can cause more injuries than it prevents. Therefore, students will NOT be on playground equipment in those temperatures.
PBIS & RECOGNITION REFERRALS
Another way we use PBIS is to utilize the referral system to create recognition referrals. Teachers make recognition referrals for scholars who have followed all schoolwide and classroom expectations. Similar to an office referral, recognition referrals come through our online referral system, but are positive in nature. When recognition referrals are received, certificates are printed out and sent home so families can be made aware that their scholar was recognized in a positive way for their behavior.
Would you like to contribute to our Dojo Store? Follow this link to our wish list. Thank you for all you do for our scholars!
