Phonics: CVC words. Intro to middle sounds with the short vowel sounds like /a/, /e/, /i/, /o/, /u/. (cat, bed, sit, hot, sun)
Power Words: love, I, a, at, am, in, it, is, up, on, an, can, can’t, the, big, has, had, get, yes, lots, and, look, this, that, with, will, live, have, for, are, no, go, be, we, he, me, she, all, was, my, why, to, do, who, you
ELA: We started the month by celebrating Read Across America. We began Unit 3 on Ecosystems. So far we have studied savannahs, forests, and oceans. We talked about living and nonliving things, animals and plants and their adaptations, and the food chains in these Ecosystems.
Math: We practiced using position words (above, below, behind, besides, next to, in front of). We then started a unit on addition: adding numbers to 5. We have been using a lot of vocabulary! (add, in all, join, total, (=) equal sign, (+) plus sign)
Science: We reviewed needs and wants. We spent the rest of March talking about how to reduce our snack trash and what items can be reused or recycled. We also talked about classroom resources and what we can do to conserve our classroom resources.
1st Grade Updates
ELA: First graders began a unit on family stories. In this unit students will focus on retelling family stories by being able to identify the characters, setting, problem, solution, theme, and key events (first, next, last). In phonics, students learned how to recognize compound words and practiced spelling words with soft c and g (cent, gem) and silent k and w (knot, wrap).
Math: First grade math superheroes reviewed strategies for adding and subtracting. Students also began a unit on addition within 100. Students are practicing how to add using mental math and how to represent adding tens and ones.
Science: Students continued to learn about the functions of plants and animals. Students observed similarities and differences in parents and offspring.
We had fun celebrating Read Across America Week and read a special book each day to match the theme of the week. Students were very excited to bring in tickets when they participated in B.E.A.R. month!

Ways to support your child's academic growth from home
- Reading can be fun for kids and adults when you turn it into an adventure! At school, students learn how to monitor their reading and look for various parts within words. When students can identify these smaller parts in words, it helps them to decode larger words. Try reading with your child and make it sound like you’re going on a treasure hunt. Instead of reading the same book over and over again, try making up new rules for each time you read it together. This will help them learn more about the story and help build their vocabulary as well.
- Kindergarten friends are beginning to understand the concept of addition. They have learned a number bond song where they use each hand to represent parts that come together to make a whole. Singing the song while practicing the concept of addition with objects at home is a great way to reinforce understanding. First grade friends are building their understanding of place value. Trying to use mental math for counting when you are together in a store is a great idea for building number sense. For example, how many oranges are in the bag. If we buy two bags, how many would that be? They can add the group of ten and then the extra ones.
Special Classes
Art with Ms. Sanft
- Dixson Art students have been completing their projects and starting some new ones! We will be focusing on making some Artwork inspired by Spring, in the coming month. Students completed a project that involved making “identical” drawings on both black and white paper, with black and white pencils. The results were impressive!! In between projects, the students had time to engage in one of their favorite “ Free Art” activities! They were given a tray full of legos and they were instructed to build any 3 dimensional creation they wanted! Watching them use their imaginations to construct is incredible!!! They get such joy from the open-ended lesson… The opportunity to use their fine motor skills in this way is super valuable. I look forward to making more Art together after the break!
Library with Ms. Watson
- In the library we read about Presidents and their pets. We learned that Presidents have to make a lot of decisions and President Obama’s daughters got to decide what dog they wanted.
- We also read I Spy books. We learned that authors and illustrators work together to tell us stories through words and pictures. We need to read and look carefully at both the words and the pictures so we can understand what they are trying to tell us.
- We learned all about fairy tales and how they include magic. The Story of the Leprechaun was about the magic of a leprechaun, his pot of gold, and rainbows.
- Lastly, we welcomed Spring and the beautiful things that come alive during this wonderful season.
Music with Mr. Funke
- Students in music have taken big steps toward becoming developing singers! We have welcomed many solo singers to perform for their peers and demonstrate skillful singing of songs learned in class.
- Having solo singers in the classroom is a great opportunity to talk about being a member of an audience. Students have been good listeners for their peers and they have offered encouragement and appreciation, complimenting each other on their accomplishments!
- Our students have begun learning their school spirit song, Dixson Spirit Way and enjoyed some fun songs and games from Ireland!
Physical Education with Mr. Tiernan
- March Madness has arrived in gym.
- Students are engaged in our tennis unit. One handed serves and hitting the ball out of mid air is developing students hand/eye coordination.
- Please have your child wear sneakers on their gym days.
Nurse Notes
The onset of spring can also bring in allergy season. Severe seasonal allergies can make anyone feel miserable. Prescribed allergy medication can alleviate symptoms but often at the cost of feeling sleepy or groggy. The four types of Conjunctivitis (“Pink Eye”) can be difficult to distinguish. The two that are extremely contagious are bacterial and viral. The other two (allergic and contact) are not contagious. Only a licensed practitioner can diagnose and treat Conjunctivitis. If bacterial, your child will receive antibiotic drops and needs to remain home from school until a clearance note is received from their doctor.
As a reminder, please notify the Health Office with any changes in your child’s health status throughout the year, including a new allergy diagnosis, changes in medication orders or newly prescribed glasses.
Have your child wear appropriate attire and shoes for active outdoor activity. Secure sneakers that he/she can tie or fasten are best for running and climbing. Spring break is a great time to work on the skill of learning to tie shoes.
A refillable water bottle will be necessary to help your child remain hydrated.
