October 2024
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Happy October, everyone! As the fall season settles in, we are gearing up for an exciting month filled with learning and connection. October also brings parent-teacher conferences, a valuable opportunity for us to partner with families and discuss student progress. We appreciate your support as we continue to work together to ensure our students have a successful and enriching school year. Thank you for being a part of our wonderful school community!
Warm regards,
Melissa Williams
Elementary Principal
Halloween
Parties
As we prepare for our upcoming Halloween celebration, we want to ensure that all students can safely enjoy the festivities. Due to various food allergies and medical conditions, please only send in items that your child's teacher has specifically requested.
Your cooperation in following these guidelines helps us create a fun and inclusive environment for everyone. Please refrain from sending any additional treats or items beyond what has been listed, as we need to carefully monitor all contributions for safety.
Thank you for your understanding and support. If you have any questions, please contact your child's teacher.
Parade Guidelines and Times
Halloween parades will happen in the morning. Students should wear costumes to school that morning. Each grade will take turns walking around the playground gate and back inside the building, weather permitting. Family members are welcome to watch the parade from outside the fence. In the event of inclement weather, the Halloween parade will be canceled and will not be rescheduled. Remember that inflatable costumes are not allowed with the number of stairs here at Central.
3rd grade - 9:00
1st grade - 9:20
4th grade - 9:40
2nd grade - 10:00
Costume Guidelines
Please take note of the following costume guidelines for our elementary school:
- No inflatable costumes
- No weapons (including toy swords, guns, or any other items that resemble weapons)
- No costumes with blood, gore, or scary elements
We encourage students to wear fun, creative, and age-appropriate costumes that contribute to a positive and enjoyable atmosphere for everyone. If you have any questions, feel free to contact your child's teacher or the school office.
Scholastic Book Fair is coming soon!
Get ready—the Scholastic Book Fair is coming to our school! This is a great opportunity to connect with your child over the thrill of bringing home new books to dive into again and again. Studies show that kids read more when they choose books for themselves. Fostering a love of independent reading leads to various benefits, including academic success and improved mental health.
Here’s everything you need to know about the Book Fair:
Dates: October 14th through 17th
Location: Central Elementary School Library Media Center
Family Event schedule and location: Open during Parent Teacher Conferences

Socktober
Each October Mr. Schleicher's class collects socks for Carriage Town Ministries. If you would like to donate please bring a pack of new socks of any size to school. Have your student drop them in one of the many donations boxes around the building.
Attendance Policy
This attendance policy is used district-wide at the elementary and intermediate levels. If a student has excessive absences (including excused), the following procedure will be followed:
Step 1: The teacher calls or conferences with the parent after 7 days absent.
Step 2: The teacher notifies the counselor and principal after 10 days absent. The principal and counselor will decide on future procedures.
Step 3: The counselor or principal will make student and parent contacts. Intervention strategies will be initiated.
Step 4: The principal may require a meeting with the GISD Attendance Liaison Officer. 39
Step 5: If attendance improves, the teacher monitors attendance and returns to Step 1. If attendance does not improve for students in Grades 1-6, the principal takes action up to and including filing truancy petition with the court.
The attendance policy can also be found on page 38 in our District Student Handbook. If your child is going to be absent, please call the attendance line so we can mark it as excused. (810) 591-0828
Lost and Found Items
We already have quite the collection in our Lost and Found! Please stop by and see if your child has an item they have left here. In addition, let’s remember to write your child's name on their items. This way the items can be returned. Also, any items we have in our lost and found at Winter break will be donated to a local charity.
Early Release Day
Wednesday, October 9th, is our next Early Release day of the year. Expect your students who ride the bus home approximately two hours early. The student day ends at 1:28, and we will begin the dismissal process at 1:15.
Please remember that we have one Early Release day each month except December and June. Early Release days operate on a schedule different from half-days. Students leave two hours earlier than a regular day and still have lunch at school.
Intersession I
This year's intersession is October 28th - November 1st. There is no school this week. We also will not have school on Monday, November 4th, for a teacher workday. We resume school on Tuesday, November 5th.
Transportation Tags
Please ensure that the yellow transportation and the QR identification tag (if your student is a bus rider) are securely attached to your child's backpack, as shown in the picture. This will help school staff and bus drivers quickly identify your child and ensure they go to the correct place.
Visitors at Central
All visitors at Central will be asked to ring the doorbell at the front entrance. A member from the office will greet you through the microphone; please state your name, your child's name, and what brings you in that day. Parents, guardians, and other family members will be allowed into Davison Community School buildings to:
· Drop off/pick up student medications
· Attend IEPs/504s or Parent-Teacher Conferences
· Or as an Approved Volunteer
Student Sign In
If you are dropping your child off late, please walk your child to the main entrance, ring the bell, and wait for an office staff member to let you in to sign your student in for the day.
Student Sign Out
If you pick your child up early, ring the bell outside, and a staff member will greet you. Your student will then be called to the office, and you will sign them out. Please be sure to present your picture ID for identification.
Birthday Treats
Central students and staff LOVE to celebrate birthdays! Due to ongoing concerns regarding food allergies, medical conditions and dietary restrictions, Davison Community Schools no longer allows food treats, including cake and cupcakes, to be sent in.
Please talk with your child’s teacher about alternate ideas for celebrating your child’s birthday .
