Cougar News You Can Use
Week of September 16th
Principals Message
We had another great week of learning here at school. Students are settling in nicely and learning the routines. Some students are challenging how to behave in the building with unkind or inappropriate behavior. Please have a discussion with your child that their words matter, being kind, keeping hands to themselves (even in a joking manner) is how we roll here at McLaughlin.
Please be mindful about drop off and pick up, while it has improved please drop your student off in front of the school or in the Green Acres parking lot and then have them walk to the front courtyard. Please do not drop off any 5th graders at the entrance to the modulars. We do not let students into the modulars before 7:20am and dropping them off near the school side door where they enter for unified arts is not acceptable due to the fact that we do not have supervision there.
While we understand that people are being courteous to the students when they stop to let them cross the cross walk, please let Mrs. Williams direct traffic and I will tell the students when to cross the cross walk for safety purposes and to keep the flow of traffic going.
Bus behavior: Please remind your child that the bus expectations are to be safe, responsible and respectful. Riding the bus is a privilege and not a right and that privilege can be revoked at any time with a bus suspension. Students need to be seated, not screaming, throwing objects etc when riding the bus. For the safety of all please talk to your child about appropriate behavior on the bus.

Beyond the Screen parent information night
As we are sure you are aware, there is a mental health crisis happening among youth in New
Hampshire. Anxiety, depression, stress, suicide and screen and social media addiction are all on
the rise in young people and it has reached unacceptable levels.
This fall our organization is sponsoring a three-part series called Beyond the Screen. In
September, October and November we will hold three free evening events where we tackle the
issue of kids and screens and phones in school. We will screen the newest version of the film
Screenagers, which is designed to target elementary parents and students, and bring in experts
from around the country to share their knowledge. The recent attention surrounding the book
Anxious Generation by Jonathan Haidt has elevated the discussion to the forefront and we
believe there is no better time than now to share these films and engage, particularly with
elementary school parents who are still able to make the changes needed to help our kids lead
happier, healthier lives. An outline of the series is attached.
