Dear Celtic Families and Friends,

It's hard to believe that we're already entering the 3rd week of 2021! And what a 3 weeks it's been, in school and outside school! We've yet to have a Monday or a normal Friday. And we've yet to launch our 9th period schedule (the schedule we all had before the Pandemic).

Perhaps this week can mark our true start to 2021. Our virtue this week is Temperance, one of the four cardinal virtues (see below for information). What a perfect way to respond to the frantic last few weeks. And it couldn't be more apt to begin this Temperance week with a thoughtful and timely National reflection on the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. To see our Nation dedicate a day to profound introspection and service to others is humbling and exhilarating. We may be the only nation in the West that consciously and collectively sets aside a day to reset its compass and affirm the dignity of all people. My family overseas assures me this is seen abroad as perhaps the most compelling and admirable of all the wonderful qualities that define the United States.

At Holy Trinity, we educate ourselves weekly in this important self-examination. Our students actively engage in a study of the Catholic Virtues, and reference events in the world around them to understand Christ's call to a virtuous life. And in response to complex social issues, our students learn that it is through education and practice, through stumbling and trying again, that a person finds freedom, harmony, and balance as a virtuous human being.

The faculty and staff look forward to welcoming everyone back to in-person school. We also respect and defend those who choose caution and continue with on-line school. As our journey through the pandemic hopefully begins to wind down, we can all agree that Holy Trinity rode this out together, sometimes imperfectly, but always courageously.

The virtue of Temperance is the fourth Cardinal Virtue.

What are the virtues of Christianity? A virtue is the habit of doing good, making it easy and delightful. A virtuous person is free! The Christian virtues give us freedom from being overpowered by temptations and our vices. Everyone is born with a capacity for virtue, but we need education and practice to attain the freedom, harmony, and balance of the virtuous, excellent human being. God gives us the theological virtues of faith, hope, and charity. These virtues adapt our finite human faculties for participation in the divine life, to be in relationship with God. The theological virtues infuse and give life to the four Cardinal virtues.

DEFINITION OF TEMPERANCE:

Enables one to be moderate in the pleasure and use of created goods

KEY POINTS OF TEMPERANCE:

• Temperance moderates one’s desires and pleasures
• Temperance strikes a balance: It does not destroy passions but moderates them
  
• The morally immature person is unreasonable and resistant to correction

"All that constitutes our most basic dignity is gift from God. What constitutes our greatest dignity is becoming a gift to God. But to give ourselves as a gift, we must first possess ourselves, so as to be free for this giving. This self-possession is principally achieved, ..., by the virtue of temperance. It is this virtue that puts the order of reason into the depths of the human personality, thus transforming our most basic passions and appetites. The temperate person is therefore capable of “becoming a gift”. This truth is captured in the following words: “Charity is the form of all the virtues... . And as our human dignity reaches its climax in our “being a gift” to God and our neighbor, we can close by once again affirming that the virtue of temperance is the most basic friend of this dignity."

Since 2009, the 20 Catholic school communities of the Diocese of Austin have gathered every January to celebrate National Catholic Schools Week, honor an unsung hero from each of their communities and raise funds in support of tuition assistance programs. Since 2020 has been a rollercoaster of a ride and we don't know what the beginning of 2021 holds in store for us, the Office of Catholic Schools will host a very special VIRTUAL event this year to achieve the same goals.

This year, the Virtual Talent Showcase will replace our beloved gala, but promises to remain as joyful and inspiring as it has always been. We will still recognize honorees from every school and raise funds to provide tuition assistance for families who need it - which as you can imagine, the needs have increased exponentially.

We are excited to showcase our talented students, teachers and priests.

We are also excited to have Bishop Bill Wack, CSC, from the Diocese of Pensacola-Tallahassee, and former pastor of St. Ignatius Martyr Church and School in Austin, as our keynote for the evening.

In selecting Honorees, Holy Trinity seeks to recognize persons whose charity and kindness have a demonstrable impact on our school. The Lockharts are almost unmatched in both these qualities. For over 10 years, both Larry and Mona have been ever present at Holy Trinity as parents, as volunteers, as coaches, and as benefactors.

The Lockharts consistently show up to help for events at HT. They show up to set up chairs each year at graduation, and return to put them away. They show up to help with our Gala each year, then return to clean up late into the night. They accompany athletic teams to their away games, providing meals, rides, snacks, and support, regardless of the distance or of the sport. And they're always on the sidelines cooking hamburgers or running the concession stand, even if it means missing their own son's success on the field just beyond the concession stand.

Through the years, they have shown a love for Holy Trinity in all its expressions. Most importantly, Larry and Mona are devout Catholics and qualify all their generosity by placing their thanks directly on Christ and on His peace and His love. They embrace and embody the Christian call to recognize the sacred heart of Jesus in every person around them and to treat them accordingly.

Larry and Mona Lockhart have supported our school financially, emotionally, spiritually and through countless hours of service and volunteerism. They are an outstanding family and are pillars in our school history and culture.

It is with the utmost gratitude and admiration that we nominate them as this year's Celebrating Catholic Schools Catholic Education Service Award Honorees.

The weekly dress code for ALL students is:

Mondays: Regular Uniform

Tuesdays: Mass Attire

Wednesdays: Mass Attire

Thursday: Regular Uniform

Friday: Spirit Wear

Regular uniform:

Boys: khaki pants, HT polo (navy or white), BELT, brown or black shoes (Sperry-type or dress, not athletic shoes). Navy, black or tan crew type socks only. No white socks. No patterned or ankle socks. Optional HT hoodie or HT sweater, cardigan, sweater vest, HT blazer or HT Letterman jacket. Optional white undershirt when it’s cold.

Girls: plaid HT skirt, HT polo (navy or white), blue, black or white KNEE HIGH socks, blue or black mary-jane shoes or Tom-type shoes. Optional HT hoodie or HT sweater, cardigan, sweater vest, HT blazer or HT Letterman jacket. Optional white undershirt when it’s cold. Optional navy or black leggings or tights when it’s cold. Leggings must be worn with HT socks.

Mass attire:

Boys: TIE, BELT, khaki pants, HT oxford shirts. Navy, black or tan crew type socks only. No white socks. No patterned or ankle socks. Optional HT sweater, sweatshirt, cardigan, sweater vest, HT blazer, or HT Letterman jacket may be worn in the Chapel. Blue or black jeans in good repair (no holes or tears, intentional or accidental). Any HT T-shirt. Optional HT hoodie or HT sweater, cardigan, sweater vest, HT blazer or HT Letterman. Optional HT beanie or HT hat (not baseball cap style).

Grooming/hair length:

Boys: short hair or naturally textured/curly hair (including twists or locks) that does not touch the ears. No shaved or partially shaved heads with long hair above it. No wording shaved into short hair. No mullets. No man-buns. During Athletics, individual coaches will determine permission for tied back hair.

Girls: well groomed hair of any length. No shaved or partially shaved hair. Ultra short pixie styles may be considered at discretion of Principal. No loose top-head buns. No man-buns revealing short or shaved hair. During Athletics, individual coaches will determine permission for tied back hair.

Grooming/girls nails:

Girls may wear nail polish but it must be kept tidy and be free of chips or fading. Girls may have salon-done nails. Nails may not be longer than 1/2 inch. The design and theme must be appropriate for school. Excessive colors/designs are not allowed.

Grooming/boys must be clean shaven.

Grooming/earrings:

Boys: no earrings allowed at all.

Girls: no more than one piercing in each ear. No nose rings allowed.

For the complete Dress code, please refer to pp.27,28,29 in the Parent/Student Handbook. The Handbook outlines the grooming standard expected.

Please note:

• Some classrooms do not allow Hoodies. Students should consider keeping an HT sweater in their lockers for those classes. No hoodies are ever allowed during Mass.
• Boys must own a tie and WEAR IT on Mass attire days. Each Mass days, we get a stream of boys coming to the front desk asking for a tie. They try to hide that they don't have one under their hoodie. GET A TIE!
• Boys must own a belt and WEAR IT every day (except Spirit wear day). When hoodies come off for Mass, oops, no belt. Please wear a belt! Keep a tie and belt in your locker if you need. Write your name on your tie.
• Girls’ socks MUST reach the knee and be pulled up. Too many girls are coming in with socks that reach half way up their calf. Please purchase the correct length socks.
• Girls’ skirts MUST touch the ground when they are kneeling. If they do, the skirt is the correct length. If they do not, then their skirt is TOO SHORT. We have many girls who either got their skirts from past students and whose skirts are too short, or girls who purchased their skirts freshman year and have since grown. PLEASE CHECK YOUR STUDENTS’ SKIRT LENGTH AND MAKE CHANGES AS NECESSARY. Releasing the hem, if this creates the correct length, is allowable. Skirts that reach mid or low-mid thigh are unacceptable and students will be written up on the first infraction. A parent will be called to replace the skirt or take the student home by the second infraction. PLEASE PARENTS AND LADIES: TAKE CARE OF YOUR SKIRTS. Write-ups will begin the week of January 18th, which allows time to determine compliance and make plans to purchase a new skirt if necessary.
• All students: you can NOT wear non-HT outer-wear in the school: non HT jackets or hoodies or sweatshirts or leather jackets or jean jackets or whatever, no matter how cool they look or how much Mrs. Brogan likes your jacket. Keep an HT outer-wear item in your locker if you keep forgetting and get cold at school.
• Lastly, please understand that these dress code elements are not a statement of disapproval of personal fashion or style, nor are they in any way meant to indicate a shame issue for those who do like all these styles or statements. Students are asked to keep the pride of their personal grooming style outside of school hours, not because we dislike it or frown upon it, but because we've all agreed to be HT students and are making a collective statement of a choice we've made about our education, our comportment, our self-projection, our strength, and our humility. Leave out your extra earring, undo your man-bun, tuck your shirt in, tidy up your look, not because we don't love man-buns or extra earrings, but because while in the halls of Holy Trinity, we're willing to show that we have the self-confidence to die a little bit to ourselves and partner with our school to show our determination to succeed in today's world.

What is financial aid?

• When we talk about financial aid, we’re talking about ways you can get assistance paying for college.
• Financial aid comes in many forms. Most forms of financial aid are based on your income or your family’s income, your GPA, test scores, and/or transcripts.

What are the main types of financial aid?

Grants

• Grants are financial aid that does not have to repaid.
• The grant amount is based on financial need, cost of attendance, and enrollment status.

Loans

• A loan is a form of financial aid that must be repaid with interest. There are both student loans and parent loans.
• Student loans do not need to be paid back until the student graduates, withdraws from college, or drops below full-time status.

Scholarships

• Scholarships are gift aid and do not have to be repaid. These awards are based on different factors including merit, financial need, and other factors like talent or community service.
• They are awarded by institutions, governments, private individuals, foundations, and community organizations.

Work-Study

• Work-study is a part-time job opportunity. Work-study may be included in a student’s financial aid award. The student can then earn that award amount by working on campus throughout the academic year.

How can I get financial aid?

Complete a FAFSA

• The most-important step to take is to fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Once you complete it, you can have your results sent to various colleges that you may be interested in.
• Once you’re admitted, colleges will use your FAFSA to calculate any need-based financial aid you’ll receive. They’ll send you a summary via your financial aid award.

Fill out scholarship applications

• As you now know from our definition above, there are two types of scholarships: automatic and those requiring a separate application. At some colleges and universities, you simply have to apply for admission to be eligible for automatic merit scholarships. When it comes to outside scholarships, you must search and apply separately.

Get good grades

• It’s important to stay on track and attain the highest grades you can in classes. The higher your grades and test scores, the better chance you’ll have of receiving merit scholarships and other outside scholarships which may have a merit component.

What are some other strategies to pay for college?

• Students employ a wide range of methods outside of financial aid to help offset college costs. No one strategy is right for everyone and you should decide what works best for you.
• Some students work part time during the academic year as well as during the summer to offset college costs. Some also get help in the form of family savings. Others take AP courses in high school to earn college credit or start out at a community college and then transfer to a four-year college or university.

As you consider costs, admissions and financial aid counselors at all colleges and universities are there to help you nail down the right strategies for your situation.

November is National Scholarship Month, referred to by the National Scholarship Providers Association as a time to raise awareness of scholarship opportunities for current and future college students.
