Tips for Families
Guide your child to better decision-making - Making well-reasoned decisions is key to becoming an independent learner. When there is a decision to make, guide your child's thinking by asking questions. For example, you might ask what could happen if your child chooses one toy over another at the store. Which toy would your child play with more? It is also important to let your child learn from choices. Living with the results of a poor choice helps kids make a better one next time.
Decision-Making Improves Thinking Skills
Research shows that children who are constantly told what to do are likely to grow up having difficulty making decisions for themselves. This is a problem, because making well-reasoned decisions is key to becoming an independent learner and person.
To foster decision-making skills:
- Increase the number of decisions your child is allowed to make. Let your student have the final say on things such as what to wear or what music to listen to in the car.
- Limit the options to choose from. If you know your child would choose ice cream for lunch if there were unlimited options, ask, "Would you like to have a chicken sandwich or a grilled cheese?"
- Ask guiding questions. What will happen if your child chooses one toy over another? Would one be more fun to play with longer?
- Let your child learn from living with choices. Experiencing the consequences of a poor decision will help your student make a better decision next time
We need your help with PBIS!
At Rockbridge we engage students in strategies that promote positive behavior and expectations throughout the school, through Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS). Teachers and students work together to create a respectful, engaged and safe environment earning mustang money that they can spend at the school store once a month, attend the Big Events, and in their classroom.
In order for our store to be able to run every month we need support in purchasing items for the store. If you are able to support and purchase any items from the list provided we would be more than grateful.

International Newcomer Center
Did you know? The International Newcomer Center (INC) is the first point of contact in GCPS for newly arriving international families with middle and high school students, and the source for language services for the school district.
At the INC, International Student Advisors (ISAs) meet with students and families to better understand their academic background and future interests. They screen students for proficiency levels in English, language arts, and mathematics. Appropriate course placement and transcript analysis help ensure these students get and stay on track for graduation.
Learn more about the INC and important steps for families who are transferring a student to GCPS from another country here!
