The Power of Progressions (GRADES K-5): Untangling the Knotty Areas of Teaching and Learning Mathematics
Join us at BOCES 2 Professional Development Center on Wednesday, January 18, 2023.
As more teachers look to add high-yield tasks to their repertoire, the struggle to make it all work becomes real. Let's examine how problem-based lessons can be used throughout the scope of a unit and how we can harness their power to move student thinking forward. We'll identify strategies and explore some tasks that help us find a healthy balance between application, conceptual understanding, and procedural fluency. Participants will:
•Unpack the importance of application, conceptual learning, and procedural fluency, and the role they play in moving student thinking through a mathematical progression.
•Engage in grade appropriate 3-act tasks and understand how the implementation of low-entry, high-scalability tasks can be used to reach all students. Participants will identify when and how these lessons can be used throughout the scope of a unit.
•Understand how problem-based lessons can be used within the instructional framework (opening, work session, close), and the purposeful moves required to orchestrate an effective closing session.
•Identify ways in which problem-based lessons can be used as formative assessment to monitor student growth.
The Power of Progressions (GRADES 3-6): Untangling the Knotty Areas of Teaching and Learning Fractions
Join us at BOCES 2 Professional Development Center on Thursday, January 19, 2023.
Let's explore some key understandings involving fractions by examining the developmental progression of models, strategies, and concepts, and how they all build on one another. Many times, as our fraction units near, the emphasis on teaching and learning mathematics shifts to rules and procedures which shouldn't be the case. To avoid this approach, we'll identify how simple changes in everyday practice can leave a math residue that builds solid reasoning and makes student understanding stick.
Participants will:

Make Learning Stick: Support Rigor, Differentiation and Executive Functioning with Tools and Visuals!
Join us at BOCES 2 Professional Development Center on Thursday, January 19, 2023.
Support rigor, differentiation and executive functioning skills through learning about anchor charts, visual notebooks, process charts, interactive word walls and more! This session will include "make and take" time, so come with a unit and skill in mind!
Exploring Best Practices in Phonics/Word Study Instruction, K-2 Levels
Join us at BOCES 2 Professional Development Center on Friday, January 20, 2023.
Join us for a full day to explore the best practices in the teaching of phonics/word study. We will discuss the importance of having a clear scope and sequence, using assessment to differentiate instruction, and helping students apply their learning to their reading and writing. We will explore options for lesson structures, including teaching phonics/word study in guided reading lessons. We will also explore ways to keep instruction engaging, lively, efficient, and effective! You will leave the session with a deeper understanding of how children's letter-sound knowledge develops to inform your classroom decision-making going forward.
Deliver Secondary Teacher Training on Using Team Projects in the Classroom
Join us online for this series beginning on Wednesday, March 15, 2023.
Participants will learn about the importance of providing students with teamwork experience and team projects in all of their classes. Participants will be able to immediately apply key concepts about developing student teamwork to their classes, including: A. Designing team assignments B. Monitoring team projects, C. Conducting peer review, and D. Assessing team projects. Participants will leave with the outline of a plan for a team project process in their classroom. Participants will be able to help peers with improving team projects in their classrooms. The training and programs will reflect the process and concepts outlined in our two books, Making Team Projects Work: A Resource for High School and College Educators (Franz & Vicker, 2021) and The Making Team Projects Work Student Toolkit (Franz & Vicker, 2022). Participants may use the training to apply to their CTE credits. The training will take place remotely, two hours per week, for three weeks.
The workshop fee includes the cost of the books which participants will need make arrangements to pick up at Monroe 2-Orleans BOCES, 3599 Big Ridge Road, Spencerport.
