A Way to Help For the Holiday's
Unforeseen challenges can make getting an education difficult. Hands of Hope helps CVSD families overcome barriers to fully participate in our community and stay in school. Last year, a family lost their shared home when the homeowner passed away, rendering them without a steady residence. Hands of Hope funds provided a gas card while new transportation options and housing were established, helping the students stay in their community school.
Hands of Hope provides support throughout the year for opportunities that would otherwise be out of reach for CVSD families. Find out more info and how to participate at givebutter.com/CVSDHandsofHope

Surveys on Student Cell Phone Use
Student cell phone use during school has an impact on student learning and wellbeing. CVSD is developing consistent guidelines for student cell phone use. Your input is valuable. All secondary students (grades 6-12) will receive a separate survey. Parents may fill out this quick 5-minute survey before Monday, December 16.

From Your School Nurse
Dear Parent or Guardian,
Spokane Regional Health District has seen an increased number of whooping cough (pertussis) cases throughout Spokane County. Whooping cough is an infection that affects the airways and can easily spread from person to person by coughing or sneezing. Whooping cough can cause a severe cough that lasts for weeks or months, sometimes leading to coughing fits or vomiting. Anyone can get whooping cough, but it can be very dangerous for babies and people with certain health conditions. In addition to whooping cough, there has also been increased incidence of ‘walking pneumonia’ throughout the United States this year compared to previous years. And of course, the common cold, flu, COVID-19, and RSV tend to circulate more in the colder months.
What You Can Do:
Keep your child home if they’re sick
- If your child has a cough, keep them home from school and activities and schedule a healthcare appointment.
- If diagnosed with whooping cough, provide a note from the healthcare provider and keep your child home until they’ve been on antibiotics for 5 days.
- If the diagnosis is not whooping cough, request a note from the provider to allow your child to return to school and activities.
- Other reasons to keep your child home:
- Fever over 100.4°F with symptoms like sore throat, rash, or earache.
- Strep throat (fever-free and on antibiotics for 24 hours).
- Vomiting or diarrhea (at least 24 hours symptom-free).
Stay up to date on vaccinations
- Ensure your family is vaccinated against whooping cough, flu, COVID-19, and RSV.
- If it’s been 8 years since your last Tdap booster (or primary series), talk to your provider about getting a booster.
Practice good hygiene
- Make sure your child washes their hands well after using the bathroom, coughing, sneezing, playing outside, and before eating.
If you have any questions, contact your healthcare provider or the Spokane Regional Health District at 509-324-1442.
