Your Lister News from the Lister News Team
Visit from Lister Alum working at KPMG!
This week, Mahir Ali, an ex Lister student, visited a group of our year 10s for a presentation on his career at KPMG. This was an excellent opportunity for our year 10s to learn about a potential career path in areas such as consulting, auditing and law. It was especially interesting to learn about Mahir's route into an apprenticeship with the firm, in which he is currently working towards a fully funded qualification as a chartered accountant. Our students had lots of excellent questions about his current role and the interesting clients he has supported in auditing.
Our students learnt about some excellent opportunities to get involved with the firm, including their upcoming insight days, beginning in the next academic year. They were advised on key skills to practice within the application and interview process for this and other opportunities!
Thank you to Mahir for coming to visit and sparking some new found interests. We wish you the best of luck in your career as a chartered accountant!
Pride Month
At the Lister News Team, we are always happy to publish stories which reflect our school values - in this case of being kind, polite and considerate. In fact, statutory guidelines for all schools state that we have a responsibility to promote the importance of Fundamental British Values which includes ensuring that all pupils understand the importance of equality and respect for all protected characteristics, which includes sexual orientation. It is also essential that all pupils have been taught some LGBT content in the curriculum and this week we're doing it through our pastoral curriculum.
In assembly this week, students have been learning about why June is known as Pride Month. Students are learning about some of the history of discrimination that the LGBTQ+ community have faced, and how they have fought for equality.
Students have also learned about some of the brave 'trailblazers' who have fought for equality and progress, often putting themselves at risk to do so. They have also been informed about how they can be a good ally in making LGBTQ+ people feel welcomed and supported in all aspects of life.
Students have been left with some key thoughts for the week;
"Nobody's free until we're all free" and "Injustice everywhere is a threat to justice everywhere".
Lister Students Staying Active
Basketball Half Term Camp
Over the course of half term students from the lower school were able to attend the HoopsFix AllStar Classic at Crystal Palace as well as 2 days of basketball camp here at Lister pushing through bad weather to keep up the good work started in the Easter camp.
The Greenhouse Basketball Programme
Over the past few weeks the Greenhouse Basketball Programme has hosted visits from Bloomberg and Janus Henderson Investment, whilst at Lister they took part in our girls only afterschool session, giving advice and mentoring to our students and talking to them about mental health and the world of business, whilst getting to seeing the incredible abilities of the girls.
Lister's Dance Curriculum
Students in Year 7 -10 who are studying Dance or are interested in Dance were treated to a performance and workshop with Irie!'s Dance Degree students, 'Connecting Vibes'. They performed a powerful piece of dance based on travel, struggle and claiming spaces using a fusion of African dance, hiphop, afrobeats and contemporary dance. The practical work was inspiring and was followed by an insightful Q&A session where participants learned more about the dancers, their degree course and the creative process.
Greenhouse World of Sports
Whilst the Year 11 exams are taking place the lower school students have been taking part in the Greenhouse Sports World of Sports. As part of this, our students have been gaining an insight into the different kinds of jobs available in sports, such as: sports science and performance analysis; alongside this they have started the 'Own a Team' project in which the students are placed into the role of team owners building an NBA expansion team, having to select a city for the team based on key information; designing kits and logos and in the weeks to come, drafting a team and presenting their team in a dragons den style pitch to investors.
