A Note from the Superintendent
Returning to school this year in the midst of the pandemic has brought out some new challenges for our staff and students. In person instruction is much more structured than remote learning and many staff and students are having a tough time adjusting mentally to the traditional setting. I recently heard a presentation on the stresses of returning to school in the pandemic and a few of the thoughts that were shared are listed below.
Some important steps to take in adjusting to the traditional instruction model are;
- Get back in a routine; Set a daily schedule that allows time for a regular breakfast, study or preparation time and time for breaks. Getting a set routine will reduce the stress of your daily schedule.
- Share concerns with our teachers, administrators or counselors; We have systems in place to provide help with any student or staff concerns. If you or someone you know who may be under stress / distress please share your concerns with a teacher, administrator or counselor. Working with each other we can all have a positive experience in the traditional instructional setting.
- Stay flexible; We have learned working through the pandemic that change is inevitable. Having the knowledge that change will happen while we work through the pandemic and preparing to be flexible will reduce your stress toward change.
- Connect with friends; Connecting with friends and sharing your life experiences is a very easy way to reduce stress and share your thoughts. You can connect with friends online, on the phone or in person. You may find stress relief by taking the time to write letters or even send a postcard.
- Improve diet, physical activity and hygiene; Eating healthy, drinking fluids, walking and improving personal hygiene will reduce stress and improve energy levels to work through the stress of the pandemic.
- Sleep; Make sure that you are getting sleep every night. When possible use the same bedtime and same wakeup time daily. A quality sleep schedule is paramount to being healthy and reducing stress.
We are doing an excellent job maintaining our mitigation strategies in the school setting for the pandemic by wearing masks, staying at safe distances and washing our hands. However; we must also focus on our physical and mental wellbeing. We want all of our staff and students to stay physically and mentally healthy while we work through the pandemic. Have a great weekend. Please rest, relax and rewind.
Every student, every day, whatever it takes!

Oregon's Top High School Football Players
Recently, Scorebook Live named some of the top high school football players in the state of Oregon. Congratulations to our Klamath Union High School standouts!
Jaymus Dutra, 5-11, 170 Senior
Klamath Union's Dutra was a midseason JV callup as a sophomore and has started in the secondary since. He’s a key two-way contributor for the Pelicans this season after earning second-team all-Skyline honors at receiver and safety in the spring.
Offensive Linemen
Hayden Smith, 6-2, 300 Junior
A KU, first-team all-Skyline selection at center as a sophomore and the team’s most experienced lineman, coach Tom Smith’s son will be the anchor of a young position group. “He’s a force in the middle on both sides of the ball,” Tom Smith said.
Assistance League Operation School Bell
In mid-October, the Klamath Home Learning Academy issued Operation School Bell vouchers to 15 K-5 students and 5 to students in grades 6-8.
Operation School Bell is a 28-year old program modeled after the National Assistance League program. It is their primary philanthropic program. The local organization provides new, school appropriate clothing and hygiene kits during the school year for about 900 children in grades K-12 in 39 Klamath Basin schools. Also, once a year, they provide copies of latest Caldecott and Newbery literary award winning books to elementary schools and county libraries. Our mission is to promote learning, school attendance and self-worth of children and families by providing new clothing.
The Assistance League works closely with the school counselors and administrators who reply upon our ability to provide children with clothing within a framework of sensitivity, respect, and confidentiality.
Public school professionals identify children in need and obtain parental permission for the child to receive clothes. They contact the organization with specific names and the members disburse the clothes through in-store shopping nights or by vouchers. Each student receives approximately $110-125 to spend on school appropriate clothes such as pants, shirts, shoes, underwear, and socks. In addition, Operation School Bell supplies students with handmade hats and scarves, and a hygiene kits of soap, toothpaste, toothbrush, hair brush and comb. Adults who feel their children are eligible should contact their local school for information.
The program services around 800 children throughout the school year. Most of the time, the selection criteria is based on the children who are eligible for the free lunch program, or have had trauma events (moved; sent to foster care or other relatives; their home destroyed by fire; or are homeless). Some children receive their clothes through four in-store shopping nights at the Klamath Falls Fred Meyer’s store at the start the school year in September or October. Assistance League volunteers organize the in-store shopping event with Fred Meyer employees. Others, mostly outlying schools, and the middle or high school students receive store certificates which they redeem at Fred Meyer’s within 30 days under supervision of Fred Meyer employees. High school seniors in need also receive help with graduation clothes.
