Carleton Washburne
Monday Memo - November 28, 2022
Washburne Families,
We hope that everyone enjoyed a safe, healthy and relaxing Thanksgiving holiday. It was a busy week before the holiday with some of our students completing a walkathon to support Northwestern Settlement house, and another group of our students performing the fall play. Today is the first day of our second trimester at Washburne and it has been wonderful to see the excitement in our students as they begin their new elective courses.
As the weather turns colder, please remember that our doors open for all students each morning at 8:20 AM. Students should be dressed appropriately for winter weather each day. We are thankful and fortunate to have a supportive community that partners with us, as we continue to provide a variety of experiences for our students, preparing them both socially and academically as they continue to high school and beyond.
We also wanted to bring your attention to an event our PTO is hosting for our 8th grade students this Friday after school:

What’s Happening in Related Studies
Trimester 1 ended on a high note for the cast and crew of The Complete History of Theatre (abridged) by Matt Thompson. Over 64 Washburne students participated in the fall play as actors, designers, writers, or crew members. The Little Theatre was packed for the evening performance with students, teachers, families, and friends. The cast worked hard to create memorable characters and stage moments and the crew created all of the costumes, sets, props, and lighting and sound elements for the show. Throughout the process, students worked on collaborating and communicating effectively with their peers, solving problems creatively, and developing resilience and self-confidence.
Cold Weather Process
Students at Washburne do not have to go outside for recess. However, if your child enjoys going outside each day, we ask for your partnership in ensuring that they have proper winter gear for the elements. When the temperature is extremely cold (a feels like temperature of 10 degrees or colder), we will keep all students indoors.
Below are resources we use as guidance for our district to determine if we are outside or staying inside for recess.
We use the Weather Channel to monitor the weather.
We use the ISBE windchill guide for “feels like” temperature.
