Jackson Middle School Newsletter - October 25, 2024
Message from the Principal
Dear Parents and Guardians,
What a great week we had here at Jackson Middle School! Yesterday we had amazing weather for the RAT Race. I truly appreciate our PTA for organizing this event as well as all of the parents who stepped up to help out during the day. The students all participated (which for a middle school fun run is amazing!) and had fun doing it. We should know how much we made in a couple of weeks and will report back to you when we do.
Early Release
Wednesday afternoon we had professional development for our teachers where we learned more about protocols in special education, 504s and English as a Second Language. We also spent time talking about responses to referrals and worked on a Bernstein strategy. We appreciate all of you parents and guardians who had to change your schedules or make special arrangements for your children so that we could do this work. It is truly helpful for the work we do on a daily basis. And we really appreciate the PTA for providing snacks for the day.
Halloween
Next Thursday is a big day for our school-- it's the last day of Quarter 1 and also Halloween! Students must have all of their work turned in by the end of day Thursday to get credit for the work. As for Halloween, students may wear costumes as long as they follow the guidelines below:
The costume must not interfere with the educational process
No masks
Minimal face paint
No weapons
Thanks for helping monitor this as your child leaves the house.
Coffee Talk
Finally, 6th grade parents mark your calendars. We will have our next Coffee Talk next Thursday, October 31 at 9:30. At this meeting we will be discussing what conferences will look like this year for you and your child.
That is it for this week. Have a great weekend!
Sincerely,
John Ferraro

Oregon Battle of the Books
Hello! We have had two successful years of OBOB at Jackson. I would love to continue the streak. I am a parent of a student who completed 3 years at Jackson. I’m looking for other parents to help out. I have developed tools to help organize (sign ups), advertise, and run practice battles. I’m looking for parents willing to help show up, maybe help run mock battles or help spread the word with the students and faculty at Jackson. -David F., OBOB@jacksonpta.org

Bullying Concerns
At the start of the school year, we understand that bullying is a major concern for both students and families. Rest assured, we are proactively addressing this issue through several initiatives. These include:
- daily advisory lessons,
- school counselor-led sessions
- collaboration with our student leadership team to foster a more inclusive environment.
If students or families need to report an incident, they can do so in the office using a student incident report or anonymously through SafeOregon.
