Tanglen Update

Morning Drop-off Safety
We know that many families choose to drop off their children in the morning for school. With winter weather coming and darker skies at arrival, please keep the following safety directives in mind:
*Pull all the way around in the loop and do not stop by the front door. This will assure more cars can pull in to the safety of our drop off loop and not be waiting on Hillside.
*Make sure your child walks on the sidewalks and does not cut across the car loop. Our sidewalks are much safer than walking across where cars are moving.
*Stay off of cellphones while driving in the loop. We want to assure we are giving our full attention to a safe and orderly drop off of students.
*If you arrive after the start of the school day (7:50), please plan to park in the parking lot and walk your children into the school. Since no staff members are present after 7:50, this will help to assure safety for your child.
Thank you!
Tanglen Students Voted Today
Today, students were able to experience what it is like to vote, complete with ballots and voting booths. Students were privately voting between the top two candidates for president. Remember there is no school next Tuesday for our real Election Day. If you vote that day, remember that your students can go with you!
Friday Night Live on November 15
Maximize fun with your friends at this special Friday night event for all 4th and 5th graders. Unleash your game skills with gym games and competitions. Dance the night away with a DJ and enjoy snacks that are available for purchase. The middle school swimming pool will also be open for swimming! RSVP is required. Learn more.
Save the Date - Tuesday, November 19, from 5:30 to 7:00
Tanglen Staff Members and our PTO are hosting a Numberacy Night. We will have dinner, learn some new math games and strategies to help your children develop mathematics skills, and learn more about our school-wide Title One goals. More details to come, but please plan to attend this informative and fun night!
Do You Have Legos to Donate?
Our School-wide Enrichment (SWE) teacher, Annie Martenson, loves to use Legos with her students. She could use MANY more Legos, however! If you, or someone you know, has Legos around the house that they would like to donate to our SWE program, please send them to school. We will put them to good use. Thank you!
Gatewood Hay Day Event Thursday, November 7 | 5:30 - 7:00 p.m. Gatewood Elementary, 14900 Gatewood Drive, Minnetonka, MN
All Hopkins families are invited to join the Gatewood Elementary community for a fun and festive Hay Day event! Enjoy seasonal treats like apple cider, hot cocoa, and donuts while meeting friendly goats and chickens. The evening will feature a hay ride, driven by Mr. Ike, and a cozy campfire (weather permitting).
In addition, you can experience a candlelight stroll through our outdoor learning spaces, where you'll have the chance to interact with various components of our Outdoor Learning School. This event is open to all, so bring your family and friends to celebrate the fall season with us. We look forward to seeing you there! Registration is recommended.

Jottings from Jim (Our Principal, Dr. Hebeisen)
How does the man in the story model dependability for us?
We also unveiled the second Hopkins Royals Mascot this morning! If my research is accurate, Hopkins is the first school district in the country to have mascots that are BOTH male and female presenting. As part of Vision 2031, we want to model vigilant equity...and having mascots that are more inclusive of our students is another step we are taking to assure students can see themselves in Hopkins Public Schools. As one of my fifth grade girls said when the female-presenting mascot arrived, "Well, it's about time!" Representation is important. HUGE THANKS to the Hopkins Education Foundation for funding the artist, who is a Hopkins graduate, to create these amazing mascots for all Hopkins Public Schools to use at events.
Enjoy the weekend ahead!

Important Message from the Health Office/MN Department of Health
We’d like to bring to your attention that Measles and Pertussis are on the rise in Minnesota. Although there have been no confirmed cases in Hopkins Schools at this time, our neighboring districts have had confirmed cases.
Minnesota is currently facing outbreaks of measles and pertussis (whooping cough), both of which can spread easily, especially in schools. Measles is a serious viral illness that spreads through coughing and sneezing. If your child hasn’t received the MMR vaccine and is exposed to measles, they may need to stay home for 21 days or longer. The school will provide guidance on how to manage this and offer educational support if necessary.
Pertussis cases are also on the rise around the state and country. This illness may start with cold-like symptoms but can develop into severe coughing fits that can last for up to three months. If anyone in your household has a persistent cough, especially if they've been in contact with someone diagnosed with pertussis, please contact your healthcare provider. While most children are vaccinated, immunity can decrease over time, and even vaccinated individuals can contract a milder form of the disease. More information
