The Tulsa Race Massacre took place on May 31 and June 1, 1921, in a prosperous Black community in the Greenwood district of Tulsa, Oklahoma. The event is considered one of the worst incidents of racial violence in American History. Conejo Valley Unified School District stands in solidarity with the victims and the survivors of the Tulsa Race Massacre and commits to contributing to the education of this American tragedy.

June is Pride Month in recognition of the valuable contributions LGBTQ+ individuals across America have made to our nation, their fight for equality, and their tireless ongoing struggle against discrimination and injustice. Pride Month is celebrated every June as a tribute to those involved in the 1969 Stonewall Uprising in Manhattan. The first Pride march in New York City was held on June 28, 1970, on the first anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising.

We love to see our scholar-musicians talents shine at the Conejo Schools Foundation's All District Music Festival! Last week, the last of ten special nights of musical performances featuring 3,600+ of our students took place at the Fred Kavli Theatre at Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza. The All District Music Festival helps to inspire students to stay involved in music throughout their academic careers by introducing them to peers at their future middle and high schools, and celebrates their commitment to participating in music programs. Congratulations to all of our talented student performers and a big thank you to all who help make these special events possible. We are so grateful for our community partners' dedication to and support of the arts in the Conejo!

This May, the Westlake High School Science Department proudly hosted a weekend STEAM Day event for local elementary students. The event featured 34 student-run activity stations with everything from making mini catapults, creating slime, taking fingerprints, nature journaling, building solar cars, and more. Participation at this event included 128 high school student volunteers, and about 60 elementary student attendees. We 💙 to see our students sharing their love of learning together. Way to go Westlake High community!

Congratulations to Ben C., an 11th grade scholar in The Center for Advanced Studies and Research at Thousand Oaks High School who earned third place and a $1,000 award in the category of Biomedical and Health Sciences at the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair for his project: The Synergistic Effect of Omega-3 Fatty Acids (DHA and EPA) and Zinc Picolinate on Traumatic Brain Injury in Galleria mellonella. The competition, hosted in Los Angeles this May, featured nearly 2,000 young scientists representing 49 U.S. states and nearly 70 countries, regions and territories across the world.

Student winners are ninth through twelfth graders who earned the right to compete at Regeneron ISEF 2024 by winning a top prize at a local, regional, state or national science fair.

Three CVUSD seniors were selected as recipients of the 2024 Ronald Reagan Foundation Education Scholars Program, which recognizes remarkable leadership, character, communication skills, academic achievement, and commitment to Ventura County. Congratulations to Michael L., Newbury Park High, Eileen Z., Newbury Park High and John B. III, Westlake High School! They are three of the 13 students from 11 local high schools who were awarded a total of $50,000 in scholarships.

This school year more than 70 scholar-athletes from the Class of 2024 have committed to playing more than a dozen different sports at the collegiate level. This achievement is a testament to the hard work, perseverance and dedication of these scholar-athletes. We celebrate their accomplishments and look forward to watching them continue to grow and succeed in their athletics and academic endeavors at the next level.
