Notes From the Principal's Desk
October 4, 2024
Olathe North families,
Welcome to the ONHS Admin Corner: Notes From the Desk of Mr. Herman.
Homecoming week was a smashing success. Thank you to STUCO for throwing such a great event. Thank you to Kara Pittman and Hannah McCartney for their leadership and dedication to ensuring an amazing week.
Parent teacher conferences are the week of October 14-16. Teachers should be reaching out via email to invite you to sign up for either a Zoom, Teams, or some kind of virtual option or you are welcome to come to our open arena night on Wednesday, October 16th from 4:30-8:30 in our commons and our Gym. Specific information will be coming through email in the next week.
A Principal's Rant!!! Senior Skip Day, it does not say Senior Skip Day(s). On September 30th the seniors decided that needed to be Senior Skip Day because it was the Monday after Homecoming. Traditionally that is not a thing. The day that is considered senior skip day is the Monday following Prom. Over the last couple years we have seen more days added to this tradition. I am aware that November 1st is the next senior skip day because it is the day after Halloween. Again, not a thing. I am calling all senior parents to stand together and remind our students that November 1st is not a senior skip day. Please do not excuse them from school. If you do attempt to call them out you will be questioned, by my attendance ladies or my administration, why they are missing on that particular day. I have asked Senior teachers to create assignments that cannot be made up if students are not in class. As you all very well know, our students receive enough days off of school. The Seniors do not need additional days off. I hope they enjoyed September 30th.
Chronic Absenteeism is a major push for this administration. We expect our students to be at school everyday. Just a reminder, DO NOT GIVE YOUR KIDS A DAY OFF!!!! I know I sound like a broken record, please make your kids come to school. Also, please read below about students that have appointments or need to leave school early. Please give the attendance ladies at least an hour to get your kids out of class.
We have a lot of events that occur at the beginning of the school year, please make sure that you are always checking https://www.sunflowerleague.org/g5-bin/client.cgi?G5genie=403 Sunflowerleague.org to see the building live calendar. I will also try to get many of the events on important date information below.

AP Exam Registration
Hello!
You are receiving this email because your student is enrolled in one or more AP classes and is eligible to take AP Exams this May to potentially earn college credit for those courses. Please read through all of this email carefully, as there is a lot of important information! Registration will close Monday, Nov 4th, so we are a little over a month away! The attachment gives step-by-step directions for registration and payment and includes QR codes for the websites needed. The AP Exam schedule is also included in the attachment.
Exam registration and payment requires 3 steps:
- Join AP Classroom for each AP class you are taking
- Indicate “Yes” or “No” for the exam for each class. The default is set to “Undecided” https://apstudents.collegeboard.org/
- Log into Touch Base and add each exam you are taking to your cart and complete payment. You will be charged $104/exam. https://ks-olathe.intouchreceipting.com/
A few important things to note:
*If you are on Free/Reduced Lunch, you still need to follow all 3 of the above steps, however you will not be charged for the exam(s).
*If you choose “Yes” for an exam, but do not pay by Nov 4th, no exams will be ordered for you. You will have to re-add them with a $50 late fee.
*If you miss the deadline and wish to register after Nov 4th, you will be charged a $50 late fee, making the cost of each exam $154.
*If you register/pay for an exam and later decide you no longer wish to take the exam, you will only be eligible for a partial refund of $54 ($104 minus the $50 cancellation fee)
*If you are on a 504 or IEP and have testing accommodations, you must notify me that you want to apply for those accommodations through your College Board account. The deadline to apply for accommodations is January 24th, 2025

EARLY BIRD DEADLINE IS NOVEMBER 1st
Retrieving Your Kids for Appoints
Note from Attendance office,
Please call or email one hour in advance of needing your student out. This allows us ample time to process their pass and/or notify teachers if they are in PE. Please check their schedule ahead of time on ParentVue to know whether they will be in PE or their lunch hour as this makes it more difficult to contact their teacher.
Please call ahead or email instead of walking up to the camera. The Performing Arts door is a student only entrance, so to maintain safety and security, parents are asked to remain in their vehicles and wait for their child to sign out and come meet them.
Last minute requests on email and voicemails may not get answered in time due to the high volume. Please give as much notice as possible to avoid having to interrupt instructional time by calling into the classroom.
Thank you!

Help Needed for Prom Fundraiser: Volunteer at the Varsity Football Concessions!
Hello Parents,
We need your help! The Junior Class is gearing up to run the concession stands at the home varsity football games, and we’re looking for volunteers to assist.
Prom is a special event for juniors and seniors, but it’s important to note that freshmen and sophomores can also attend if invited by an upperclassman. The funds raised from working the concessions will go directly toward making prom a memorable event for all.
This is a great opportunity for every grade to get involved and support this important tradition. Please click the Signup Genius link below to volunteer and help the Junior Class make prom a success.

Xello Family Portal / Portal Familiar Xello
Hello, Eagle Families!
We are thrilled to share a way for you to connect with your student’s learning at home! In 2016, the Kansas State Board of Education challenged schools to develop a process that engages students in the creation of an Individual Plan of Study, or IPS. While we are proud to involve even our youngest learners in career and future thinking, IPS development officially starts for students in middle school and continues throughout high school.
Individual Plans of Study help students examine how their interests and strengths can transfer into further education, training, and careers after high school. We know that the journey to discover how our individual skills and interests can be applied to a future career is filled with both short and long-term goals that evolve throughout life. To help students explore all possibilities, Olathe has developed classroom instruction and hands-on experiences to support the IPS process.
One way we support this is through a future-readiness resource called Xello. For the past six years, middle and high school students have explored lessons, inventories, and other programming within Xello that you can also explore with your student at home. Family Portal will not only allow you to view your student’s work but also collaboratively explore future career options, scholarships, training and school opportunities after high school.
Invitations for Xello Family Portal will be sent to parents and guardians listed in ParentVUE later this week. Those email invitations will come from noreply@xello.world and will prompt you to create a password. All students in grades 6-12 who are already connected to you as a parent/guardian will be connected to your account. If you already have an account and have forgotten your password, simply visit https://login.xello.world and select “Having trouble signing in?”
Additional information for Family Portal can be found in both English and Spanish on the Parent/Guardian support section. Please contact your student’s school counselor with any questions.
With care,
Olathe North Counselors

¡Hola Familias!
Saludos Cordiales,
Consejeras de Olathe North

Class of 2025 FASFA Information
We are trying something brand new this year that could result in you winning Airpods, an Amazon Fire tablet, or a Kindle!
So what do you have to do? Create an FSA ID!
To get a head start on the FAFSA for this year, every Senior and their parents are encouraged to create their FSA ID as soon as possible! You will use your FSA ID to log-in and complete the 2025-2026 FAFSA when it is open. If you are a parent or a student that wants to create your FSA ID at home, you can do so by visiting StudentAid.gov.
Please note that if you are a parent who already has an FSA ID from when you or one of your older children went to college, you DO NOT and CANNOT create a new one. If you do not remember the log-in information for your old account, follow the steps to recover that information!
I have created my FSA ID and so have my parents. Now what? Send screenshots that show you have created these accounts to Mr. Van Winkle at lvanwinkle@olatheschools.org (use the subject line: FSA ID Raffle Entry) or stop by his office to show him in person. For every FSA ID that is created between you and your parents, you will be entered into the raffle.
*Maximum of THREE entries allowed! Entries will be deemed eligible for the raffle if received by Friday, September 27th at 3:00 PM! Names will be drawn the next week!*
I have a special circumstance that prevents me from getting three entries – what do I do? We know that every family is different and there may be reasons that you are unable to have three entries that are completely out of your control – you live with a legal guardian, you do not have contact with one or both parents, you live in a single-parent home, etc. If you know that you have a special circumstance that does not allow three entries, reach out to Mr. Van Winkle and we will work together to see what we can do!
If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to Mr. Van Winkle at lvanwinkle@olatheschools.org! Good luck!

$5 Gift Card Drive
The Olathe North staff needs your help. As a way to celebrate our students that are recognized by staff with a positive referral and prizes for students on spirit days and student section heroes we like to give the kids $5 gift cards to QT, Starbucks, McDonald's, Subway, etc... Our gift card count is low. I am not allowed to use district funds to purchase gift cards, so I am reaching out to the supportive Olathe North community to request $5 gift cards or cash donations. With these funds I would be able to purchase said gift cards. Please feel free to swing by the front office and drop off any donations directed to Mr. Herman. I truly appreciate the support of our community to celebrate our kids. Thanks to this amazing community!!!!
