Up & Coming Events
Tuesday - PTO Meeting @ Noon, AVID Site Team
Wednesday - AVID College Day
Consumers vs. Creators
Please see the example below of how students are creators of knowledge. They can do so much more if we will let them own their learning.
Tech Tip
Counselor's Corner
Also, if you feel a class period needs an outsider coming in to do any sort of lesson related to behavior, attitude, etc - just let me know and I'll do a lesson in your class.
Rocco's Corner
This is already keeping or injuries and behavioral referrals down.
During the entirety of these transitions, A.M. round-up and P.M. dismissal times, all radio holders are expected to maintain their radios on, ready to respond.
Please continue to maintain our exemplary safety, supervision and communication.
Also remember if you are ever unable to be at your duty post, per the staff handbook, you are expected to get coverage for that post, and inform myself in advance of the coverage you arranged.
Martin's World
GT
Be watching for the GT schedule which should start next week. As we get student records, we may find that a few more students will be entering GT. Thanks for your patience.
Questioning
Have you ever had a "questions-only" conversation with a student? It would be similar to the AVID method of tutoring. If a student says, “how do you do this (math) problem? Try to respond with a question…”what steps have you taken?” “where are you stuck?” “did you understand how to do the last problem? “How did you do that one?” or...
If a student says, “why didn’t the people leave Houston if they knew it was going to storm?” Try to respond with a question or even an “I wonder” statement…”that’s an interesting question. I wonder why they waited, too. What do you think?”
Remember, “the person working the hardest learns the most”. Learning to be the teacher who asks questions rather than just giving answers is hard work...at first. It requires putting yourself in the learning chair. It will get easier and you will love watching your students come alive as their brains engage to think...and answer your thought-provoking questions. It makes thinking fun for you and them!
Caution - Don’t try this with your spouse or significant other. It may drive them crazy. Don’t ask me how I know.
SPED
Also, when ARD's are scheduled, you will be receiving an email from Jana Ellison, Diagnostician. It is a requirement that at least one general education teacher be present at all ARD's. Please respond to her email in a timely manner so she can finalize her ARD preparations.
Also, just a reminder that progress notes will go out on Friday, September 15th and are due to case managers on September 22nd. Be on the lookout!
