THE KALAMAZOO PROMISE (It is not too early to learn about the PROMISE)
11 Things You Need To Know
The Kalamazoo Promise is for ALL resident students of the Kalamazoo Public Schools. Students that attend charter schools do not earn credit toward Kalamazoo Promise scholarships during the time that they are in these non-KPS schools.
You must reside within the boundaries of KPS during all enrollment.
You must have at least all of the high school years (9-12) in KPS (enrollment and residency must be continuous) and graduate from KPS (Central / Loy Norrix / Phoenix / KILP).
The Kalamazoo Promise will not end.
The Kalamazoo Promise is a scholarship for any post-secondary education certificate, associate or bachelor program of study at the schools listed here, up to 145 credit hours total eligibility.
Vocational education is covered through certification or degree programs at state supported community colleges, The Michigan Career and Technical Institute (MCTI) and apprenticeships with Kalamazoo Electrical (KJATC) and Michigan Regional Council of Carpenters and Millwrights (MRCC).
You have ten years from the time you graduate from high school to use your Promise and can start and stop at any time.
Students sign up for The Kalamazoo Promise at the beginning of their senior year with their Promise Pathway Coach. Meetings are held for all seniors each fall. There are two simple forms to fill out for the Kalamazoo Promise.
There is an appeal process for students during their senior year, especially for hardship cases (e.g., custody, death in the family, and foster care placement).
Part-time status is acceptable for the following: all students at Community Colleges, all students enrolled during the summer semester, and on a case-by-case basis for all other students.

Seven KPS middle school students, including two from Milwood MS, perform with the MSBOA District XI Middle School Honors Band. These students went through an extensive application and recommendation process to be selected for this honor. The Michigan School Band & Orchestra Association is a statewide organization of public and parochial Band and Orchestra teachers dedicated to providing students with opportunities to learn and perform high quality music. As part of this mission, each year they sponsor and run a Middle School Honors Band. 91 middle school band students were selected from the 4 counties that District XI encompasses (Kalamazoo, Calhoun, St. Joseph, and Branch), representing over 26 different middle schools.
Congratulations to Liam Ross (8th grade, bass clarinet), and Damien Bailey (7th grade, flute) for being selected for this honor! Also special shout-out to Liam for earning "first chair" honors in his bass clarinet section in the band.
Congratulations Jonah and the ZooBOTix Team!
The middle school ZooBOTix robotics team and Milwood Magnet School Student Jonah Antoniotti competed for the first time this season at the Kentwood, MI qualifier tournament. The FIRST Technology Challenge (FTC) team was very successful on the field and in the judging room.
On the field, our team ended up ranked 11th of the 37 teams after qualification matches. Our competitive performance made us a desirable alliance partner, and we were picked to play in the #2 seed alliance. After a hard-fought double-elimination playoff bracket, our alliance fell in the final match to finish as the runners-up. However, during this playoff run, our alliance set the high score for the tournament (and the second-highest score in the state). Our kids competed with class and good sportsmanship representing their schools well.
Off the field, the kids presented their robot and design process to the judges at the event. They did an extraordinary job with such a large team sharing their experiences and designs effectively. The kids also earned the 2nd Place Control Award, which speaks to the advanced programming done on the robot.
ZooBOTix secured an invitation to the Michigan State Championship on December 13th and 14th in Muskegon, MI.
The National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) elevates a school's commitment to the values of scholarship, service, leadership, character, and citizenship and helps middle-level students develop the knowledge and skills to become well-rounded student leaders in their school, community, and beyond.
Student interested in applying must complete an application. More information to come soon...
Our 7th graders used eggs and pumpkins to test the force of kinetic energy. Kinetic energy is the energy an object has because of its motion. If we want to accelerate an object, then we must apply a force. Applying a force requires us to do work. After work has been done, energy has been transferred to the object, and the object will be moving with a new constant speed.
Hello Milwood Families,
If you have used Legos, yarn or fabric that you are not going to use we are asking if they could be donated to Milwood. The Legos would be used in STEM and science classes. The yarn and fabric would be used for fabric art in Milwood art.
Thank you.

Every school day counts in a child's academic life...
A missed school day is a lost opportunity for students to learn. In this era of increased accountability for states, districts, and schools, the connection between student attendance and learning is being studied more than ever before. As a result, education agencies are asked with increasing frequency to report attendance data in a standard manner to allow comparisons across organizations and jurisdictions.
The primary rationale for high-quality attendance data is the relationship between student attendance and student achievement.

KPS Student Code of Conduct
District Beliefs, Expectations & Responsibilities
The Kalamazoo Public School District believes that all students can learn when provided with appropriate instruction and an environment that is safe and orderly. To create such an educational setting requires a comprehensive program of instruction, written and consistently enforced standards of discipline, and the cooperative efforts of students, parents/guardians, school staff and the community. In order to develop and maintain a positive educational setting, discipline standards should balance the need for consistency and uniformity with the need for discretionary authority, and should offer alternatives. The Kalamazoo Public Schools’ Student Code of Conduct is based on the following beliefs:
1. Discipline is a natural element of educational and personal development.
2. Positive behaviors are encouraged through appropriate reinforcement and/or corrective measures.
3. The rights and welfare of the individual as well as the entire school population will be protected. 4. The Student Code of Conduct should lead to a clear understanding of behavioral expectations and consequences for unacceptable behavior.
5. The school will strive to achieve a balance between the rights of students and the need for order and safety for the entire school population.
Students demonstrate higher levels of choral music skills and knowledge; will deal with
increasingly complex works of music; and will provide more sophisticated responses to works of music. Concerts, solo, and small ensemble performance opportunities will be provided. Students sing a wide range of material, from classical to contemporary, and improve their total musicianship as well as their singing ability.
The next GSA meeting will be held on November 12, 2024 from 2:30 pm until 3:15 pm. Please meet in room 214.
