On September 30th, the New Teacher Academy (NTA) cohort met for the first time since the start of the school year, to learn how to incorporate different strategies in order to better support their multilingual students. District leadership was present, including a co-presentation from Director of Multilingual Education (Dr. Alberto Carrero), and Assistant Director of Multilingual Education (Alma Pezo). The remainder of the session was dedicated to lesson planning, and incorporating strategies such as crafting language objectives within their lessons. Mrs. Pergola's first graders at the Berkowitz School had their first shopping experience in the class store today. The students earn money for displaying positive behaviors and completing classroom jobs, all while learning about the value of money and the importance of spending and saving responsibly. They had so much fun practicing counting, making positive choices, and understanding rewards!

The Hooks School celebrated Custodial Day with students cards, door decorations and notes of thanks-- along with some sweet treats! Their gifts were presented by the September students of the ninth!

Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month
In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, students were asked to draw and color the flag of a Latin American country. Here we have James who proudly colored the Honduras flag and Camelia who brought in a fully decorated birdhouse with the colors of the Guatemalan flag and the national bird, the Quetzal! Simply beautiful!

Second grade scholars in K205 are reading and writing poetry. Here, Sra. Sánchez is pushing kids to explain how rhyming words affect the rhythm of the poem, while others practice fluent reading of a poem they wrote as a group!
First grade students participated in their first math bridging lesson this week. Classes worked together to build connections between math language in English to Spanish by finding similarities and differences in vocabulary.
BROWNE MIDDLE SCHOOL
BMS Grade 7 Math Bridge Lesson
7th-grade math teacher Rebecca Hernández engaged her students in a Bridge lesson at the end of their first math unit on scaled copies. Students compared vocabulary words in English and Spanish and noticed how the word order is different between the languages. They also noticed how Spanish words can be masculine or feminine but English words do not have gender.

CHELSEA VIRTUAL LEARNING ACADEMY UPDATES
CVLA News
Last week, CVLA students and staff embraced the theme of “Challenge by Choice” during two engaging in-person educational experiences.
- Day one took place at Hale Reservation in Westwood, MA, where participants bonded through a variety of challenges, including a high ropes course. One of our students reflected on the day's success at our School Site Advisory Council meeting this week: “(What made the two days special was) seeing everybody get along and not be judgmental. It’s cool how everyone got along—no one had issues.”
- On day two, teams tackled the Boda Borg challenge, working collaboratively to solve escape room puzzles that tested their teamwork and problem-solving skills. Laughter and fun filled the air as students and staff navigated the themed based rooms together.
We look forward to our next in-person event and more opportunities to grow and connect as a community!
