Panther Print for Parents 🐾
WEEKLY UPDATE FROM THE PRINCIPAL-SEPTEMBER 27, 2024
FROM MRS. DAWSON, SCHOOL COUNSELOR
WHAT'S UP IN SPANISH ?
Spanish classes have been learning about Hispanic Artists for Hispanic Heritage month. Each student found a piece of work by one, researched the artist and picked their favorite piece. They then drew their own perspective of the work. It’s easy to say we have some amazing artists here in Watervliet!!
WHAT'S UP IN ENGLISH 9?
In English 9, students designed their digital high school portfolio websites including required essays they acquire from all their classes. After reading Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" speech, they wrote their own dream for their nation. Topics included dreams to end hatred, violence, discrimination, bullying and harassment. They learned to apply the vocabulary words they learned and infuse them into their essay meaningfully. These essays will be loaded into their student portfolio which houses their high school brag sheet, a list of all the activities, events, awards, and coursework they completed throughout high school.

MR. COBURN HAS STARTED MEETING WITH SENIORS!
Mr. Coburn is meeting with all of the senior students individually and discussing their post-secondary goals, how to apply to colleges, and what pathways are available to them. Over the next month, we encourage all seniors to apply to multiple colleges, military branches, training programs, etc. and explore as many options as possible.
SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITY FOR SENIORS
I'm reaching out as the Director of Eureka College’s Ronald W. Reagan Leadership Program (RLP). Eureka College, a small liberal arts college in central Illinois, offers diverse academic programs, international experiences, internships, Greek life, campus clubs, and Division III athletics.
Each year, we award four-year tuition scholarships to four students through the RLP. This program includes:
- An international travel experience (recent destinations include Spain and Ireland; next year’s is Sweden)
- A fully funded mentorship experience (abroad or domestic)
- Peer and professional collaboration and networking
- Hands-on leadership training
To be eligible, students need a minimum 3.30 high school GPA and must apply and be accepted to Eureka College. Qualified students will be invited to participate in one of two scholarship competitions this fall:
- Virtual Competition: Saturday, October 19 (via Zoom) – For students outside IL, IN, IA, WI, and MO.
- On-Campus Competition: Saturday, November 9 – Open to all.
Both competitions include interviews, socializing with current RLP fellows, and a group leadership activity. Finalists, selected based on competition performance, GPA, and other materials, will be invited for individual interviews in late November to determine scholarship recipients. We welcome applications from students of diverse backgrounds who have demonstrated leadership in various areas, such as academics, community service, business, athletics, religion, and family. The Reagan Leadership Program recognizes that leaders emerge in many different arenas, and we believe many of your students would be a great fit for our program.
Please share this opportunity with your students, faculty, and coaches. For additional details on the RLP, to review program requirements, and to begin an application, please visit this link. If you have any questions, please contact me at rlp@eureka.edu or 309-467-6879.
Best regards,

IN DEMAND OCCUPATIONS
Schools are required to provide students with "the most recent analysis of in-demand occupations" produced by the state for their region as part of their EDP development and revision process. The Michigan Department of Technology, Management & Budget annually produces and updates these analyses of in-demand occupations. These publications highlight hot jobs and regional and state-wide career outlook prospectively (through the year 2030).

STAFF SPOTLIGHT MR. BRYAN CORKINS!
I am originally from Battle Creek, Michigan, which makes me pretty much a lifelong panther. I graduated from Western Michigan University with a BS in Geology and earned my USATF level 2 certification through the Villanova Track and Field Program. Which helped launch my success as a track and field coach.
Family is very important to me, and the reason I moved back to Michigan from my 13 years spent in Florida. I recently married Rhonda Purcell, who works in language acquisition for the Potawatomi Tribe. We have two children who are very active in sports and attend Mattawan High School.
I currently teach AP Environmental Science, Earth Science, and Marine/Freshwater Science. I currently coach middle school cross country which won their first regional title. I am also the Boy's Head Track coach position which will mark my 15th year as a head coach.
I am proud to be a WHS Panther because it allows me to do what I love. Despite briefly working as a UPS driver, my heart has always been in teaching and coaching. I am grateful for an opportunity to help our students and athletes achieve great success. In summary, I am a proud member of the WHS community, passionate about teaching, coaching, and supporting my students and athletes.
