Sioux Falls Community Education
Getting Started
*DRIVER'S ED CLASS ABSENCE & CANCELLATION POLICY
Attendance Requirements:
-Students must be at least 14 years old by the 1st day of class.
-Students may miss a maximum of 3 HOURS or one class. NO Behind the Wheel driving hours can be missed.
-All classroom absences must be excused and reported to Community Education. Please call 605-367-4384 to notify us.
Important Notes:
-Do not register if your student will miss more than 3 hours due to overlapping schedules (vacations, sports, etc.). Address any potential conflicts before the course starts.
-All homework will need to be made up and turned in prior to testing and receiving the Driver's Education completion certificate.
Cancellation Policy:
-If a student cannot attend, you must call Community Education at least five (5) business days before the first class.
-With a 5 business day notice, we can transfer the student to another available class.
If no classes are available, a $50 non-refundable cancellation fee will apply, with the remainder of the registration fee credited to your original payment method.
-After the 5 business day notice, the registration fee is forfeited.
- Driver's Ed is offered at Jefferson, Washington, Lincoln and Roosevelt High Schools.
- Students are not required to hold their Instruction permit before class. However, it's suggested that they make an appointment at the DMV and get their permit ahead of the class or shortly after completing the In Classroom portion of the course so students can practice driving with a parent/legal guardian and apply their learning right away!
- Once the student has their Instructional permit and they complete the course, including the Behind the Wheel portion, drive and hold onto the certificate until the 180 days have passed. Then take the certificate to the DMV to get their Restricted permit.

Teen Driving Laws
Effective July 1, 2021
The changes to teen driver permits and rules brought about by 2020 Senate Bill 113 are currently suspended by Governor Noem until June 30, 2021. Please review this information carefully and note it will apply to both existing and new learner’s and restricted permit applicants starting July 1, 2021. There is no “grandfathering,” so this applies to all unless they have already upgraded to an unrestricted adult driver’s license.
To read more about the updated Teen Driving Laws from the Department of Public Safety, please visit their website: SD Department of Public Safety / Teen Drivers
