Since 2018 HUHS has hosted a Day of Service for students and staff to go around the Hartford community and give back to Washington County.
As a graduation requirement, students at HUHS must have 30 hours of community service. Day of Service allows students to get their required hours done while connecting with the community.
“Last year, I went to the fairgrounds and the humane society to do a lot of inside work,” junior Natalie Corrie said. “This year, I am doing hands-on work while giving back to the community.”
For funeral home owner Greg Ledesma, gardening has been a difficult task to accomplish alone; however, with students’ help, the job is able to get done faster and more efficiently.
“My wife and I would have to do all of the garden work ourselves and it would take an entire day for this to work,” Ledesma said. “For high school students to do garden work has helped me immensely.”
Staff at HUHS also help out for Day of Service and guide the students on what to do.
“I think that the stereotype that the community has of high school students is that they are ungrateful and insincere,” teacher Terry Wick said. “Day of Service is one of the ways that Hartford students give back to the community and it has not been appreciated by the general public.”
For most, changing the location for Day of Service has been a good way for staff to explore new opportunities to help out. “This year, I wanted to do more hands-on work and that is why Lincoln School worked out,” teacher Kelly Schulz said. “I wanted to do something different, lively and outside.”
Day of Service creates a charitable atmosphere for students and staff to learn valuable skills through aiding businesses and nonprofit organizations.

WHAT'S HAPPENING AT THE DISTRICT?
In 2022, Hartford Union High School (HUHS) area voters rejected a referendum to update facilities. We acknowledge and respect the community’s decision. Now, we must refine our plans to better reflect the priorities of our taxpayers.
To help accomplish this goal, the District formed the Citizens Facilities Advisory Committee (CFAC). This group (made up of parents, staff, and community members) studied a facility assessment and feedback gathered from stakeholder interviews which identified more than $180 million in potential projects. We recognize completing all of these projects at one time is not realistic.
We need your feedback to determine which projects, if any, should be part of the first phase of a long-term facility improvement plan. The CFAC will use this input to finalize their recommendation to the School Board. To keep all feedback confidential, survey responses are collected by School Perceptions, an independent research firm.
The surveys need to be completed by May 31st. If you need an extra one for your household, please contact the District at info@huhs.org. Thank you for giving us your valuable time and input!
HAVE QUESTIONS ABOUT THE BUDGET OR THE SURVEY?
Superintendent Jeff Walters will give a brief presentation on the 2024-2025 Budget and the recent Community Survey. He'll then open it up for any of your questions during two Facebook Live Sessions on May 16th (link to previous recording) and May 23rd at 5 p.m. Please tune-in to our Facebook feed and tell a friend. These are critical conversations and we want to make sure everyone is informed. Thank you for caring about HUHS and our students!
