PHS on-track numbers remain solid
PHOENIX – Phoenix High School boasted one of the highest on-time graduation percentages in the state in 2023 and is on track to continue that success, according to new data centered on graduation rates and daily attendance released by the Oregon Department of Education today.
The new numbers also showed that chronic absenteeism is still a concern statewide and locally, although recent data shows the Phoenix-Talent School District making some headway in that category.
The latest at-a-glance profiles from schools and districts from across the state compiled data primarily from the 2023-24 school year and supplied updated tallies from the 2023 graduating class. Phoenix High carried a 94% on-time graduation rate in 2023, while over 95% of its 2023-24 freshmen class are on track to graduate, earning praise from the ODE in a recent conference call with reporters.
Several key Phoenix High subgroups are also off to a solid start at PHS, including:
- Ever English learners (over 95% on track)
- Students w/disabilities (88%)
- Hispanic/Latino (94%)
- Migrant students (over 95%)
The ODE also released attendance data, specifically rates of regular attenders. Regular attenders are defined as students who attend more than 90% of their enrolled school days, and in 2023-24 65% of PTS students were considered regular attenders. That’s one point below the Oregon state average of 66%.
The Phoenix-Talent School District has made great strides in its Rise and Shine: Every Day Matters attendance push so far this school year, however, with 72.4% of PTS students considered regular attenders as of last week. Talent Elementary (81.7%), Phoenix-Talent Rising Academy (81.5%) and Phoenix Elementary (80.5%) currently lead the district in regular attendance percentage.
