Applications for ALSC Fall 2017 Mentoring Program Now Available
"Administered by the ALSC Membership Committee and the Managing Children's Services Committee, the ALSC Mentoring Program seeks to match individuals with an interest in library service to children together for this one-year program.
Mentee applicants do not need to be ALSC or ALA members. The only requirement is that mentees have some connection to children’s library service. Mentees may be students, early career professionals, individuals returning to the profession, or those who would like to refine their skills, make connections, and learn more about children’s librarianship as a career.
Re-energize and give back by becoming an ALSC Mentor! Mentor applicants must be ALSC members and should have experience working in the field of children’s librarianship or children’s literature.
The ALSC Mentoring Program suggests that matches be in contact at least twice a month. This could be via email, phone, Skype, online chat, etc.
Applications will close Friday, September 1, 2017."
Free Family Engagement Handbook
"The Public Library Association (PLA) and Global Family Research Project (GFRP) have just released a new publication designed to help libraries develop outstanding family engagement initiatives. Ideabook: Libraries for Families grew out of PLA’s efforts to help libraries think more strategically about family engagement, and to learn from a variety of different approaches taken by libraries of all sizes.
The Ideabook presents case studies from more than 50 diverse libraries and how they are incorporating the five “Rs” of engagement: reach out, raise up, reinforce, relate, and reimagine. This publication contains numerous helpful suggestions for how libraries can develop meaningful, lasting relationships with families in their communities to help shape children’s learning and development."
