Hello Husky Families-

We are looking forward to enjoying spring break. The Hiawatha Huskies have been working so hard. We will officially have three quarters of the school year finished at the end of this week.

To kick off our last week of Q3 and be ready for spring break we will be having a Spring Spirit Week. Please see the below sign and feel free to participate in the different days. Spring Break will begin on Friday, March 29th and school will resume on Monday, April 8th. We hope you enjoy the time with your family this week and hopefully enjoy some sunshine and warmer temperatures.

Registration for the 2024-2025 school year will open on Monday, March 25th. In order to effectively plan for class sections and staffing for next school year, we ask that all returning students complete the online registration process by May 31, 2024. If your child will not be returning to District 100 next year, please inform the office staff at your child's school as soon as possible. Congratulations to Elias in 5th grade for being our SCOTY award winner this year. SCOTY stands for School Citizen of the Year and that is exactly who Elias is! We are very proud of his constant determination and for being a leader at Hiawatha.

We love birthday celebrations at Hiawatha and want everyone to feel special on their day. However this is a reminder that our school and district has a policy about bringing in baked goods for celebrations. Please help us to promote wellness and keep everyone healthy by not sending in edible treats. Non-edible treats such as pencils, erasers, stickers, etc can be brought in if you wish to send.

“Schools will support and promote good nutrition for students. In the event of celebrations, no food items (baked or purchased) are allowed for students due to food allergies and nutritional school policies.”

Thank you everyone who participated in the CRUMBL PTO fundraiser! Not only did we surpass all of OUR sales goals, we became the highest selling single school fundraiser for the LaGrange CRUMBL Cookie Location! Way to go Huskies! We appreciate your support for our school. Cookie orders will be available to pick up starting at 2:45 on the playground Wednesday, March 27th. Students with less than 5 boxes will receive their orders in the classroom to take home.

Please remember if you need to enter the building, you need to enter through door 1W on East Ave to gain a visitors pass.

Entry into our schools during school hours is restricted using access control and security vestibules, and security cameras are utilized to monitor building security throughout the district. Parents and other visitors coming into schools must check in at the main office. Visitors will be asked to identify themselves and the reason for their visit before gaining access to our buildings. Only one person will be allowed entry into the building at a time. Please do not hold the door open for other visitors behind you or allow others through the door when leaving. We ask for your support and cooperation in communicating with our front office staff and complying with all visitor security protocols.

We are beyond honored to share that Berwyn South and Hiawatha School were featured as a K-12 Apple Education Success Story. Last spring we had the honor of opening our school to representatives from Apple to show them what learning looks like at Hiawatha School. Watching this success story video gives us an immense sense of pride to see many of our teachers and students shine in this video for the world to see. I couldn’t be more proud to be the principal of this amazing school in Berwyn South. Our students are inspiring others each and every day and showing others what is possible. Dear Parents / Guardian:

Children who come to school with symptoms of illness are not in the best frame of mind for learning. Please do not send your child to school if any of the following symptoms are present:

• “Runny” nose, especially with green mucous
• Rashes or any scratching for unknown reasons, with or without fever
• Red, watery, itchy eyes that were crusted shut upon awakening
• Chills or fever of 100.4 or higher
• Diarrhea or vomiting
• Constant coughing

Every time your child misses school to see a doctor, have the doctor write a note. Bring the note to school when the child returns.

There has been lice reported in the school. We are sending this notification to offer you information to avoid misconceptions. Lice could have come from almost anywhere (i.e., a classmate, an upholstered seat at a movie theater, after school clubs/activities, a sporting event/practice or a friend’s house). Spread from one child to another can occur during direct head contact or by sharing personal items such as: Combs, brushes, caps and /or helmets. Lice is common among school children and even the cleanest child can easily have head lice.

The nurses in District 100 are prepared to advise parents on dealing with suspected or actual lice manifestation. However, reducing lice outbreaks depends on the cooperation we receive from parents. Children’s heads should be checked at home on a regular basis. If you find lice on your child, please notify Nurse Cindy. They need to be treated prior to the return of school. If every parent takes responsibility to check the entire family often, this nuisance can be controlled. Thank you for your cooperation. Students begin entering the building promptly at 8:25. Please arrive by 8:20 to find your child’s classroom line and be ready to enter. Dismissal is at 3:00 and students will be dismissed on the playground. Please meet your child on the playground.

Please remember there is NO PARKING in our fire lane on East Ave or in the alley. If you are parking you will need to find street parking around the school and walk to the playground to pick up your child.
