Towson High School Newsletter
August 30, 2024
Principal's Message
Dear Towson High School Community,
Our theme this year is “LEVEL UP.” As an instructional staff, we plan to LEVEL UP teaching and learning so that each student has access to the learning materials and experiences that they need to thrive. During the first few weeks of the school year, students will be introduced to new schoolwide tools that will support the entire Towson High School learning community in LEVELING UP.
We hope you partner with us in LEVELING UP this year! As families, we encourage you to join our Parent-Teacher-Student Association (PTSA) and/or Booster group (see information below in the “Get Involved: Join a Parent Organization” section), volunteering at a school, taking a Parent University workshop, applying for a job with BCPS, learning more about the programs and services BCPS offers, becoming a business partner with the school (see information below in the “Career Navigator News” section); and/or participating in our community outreach and engagement events.
Please also help us to LEVEL UP by helping us enforce our cell phone policy where cell phones must be silent and away during the entire instructional period. Cell phones are only permitted during class changes, breakfast, lunch, and dismissal. If you need to get in touch with your student, please call the Main Office 443-809-3608. Here are resources that can assist you in supervising and limiting your students’ cell phone use: Android resource 1, Android resource 2, iOS resource.
We look forward to LEVELING UP with you for a 5-star school year!
In partnership,
Dr. Kim Culbertson

School Safety
Student Handbook Presentation
Safe Driving On & Around Campus
For the safety of our students, staff, families, and neighbors, it is essentail that all drivers practice safe driving behaviors on campus and on the roads leading to our campus. Please also remember that our neighbors that live on/off of Hillside Ave and Cedar Ave need to be able to access their homes during afternoon dismissal.
Baltimore County Revenue Authority - Parking Enforcement Division will be monitoring activity on Hillside Avenue and Cedar Avenue in the afternoons. Vehicles are not permitted to line up or park on Hillside Avenue and Cedar Avenue.
School Bus Camera Safety Program
Under a new initiative, focused on student safety, the Baltimore County Police Department has partnered with Baltimore County Public Schools and AngelTrax to install automated school bus enforcement cameras on nearly 1,000 buses that transport students to and from school and various programs within Baltimore County. The School Bus Camera Safety Program mandates that cameras be mounted on all buses. Motorists who illegally pass a stopped school bus with activated flashing red lights will be subject to a $250 fine. Each citation will be verified by AngelTrax and reviewed, verified, and approved by an employee of the Baltimore County Police Department. Following that review, citations will be mailed to the registered owner of the vehicle. No points are associated with the issuance of a citation. Click here for the full press release.
Fall Bus Evacuation Drill
The fall 2024 bus evacuation drill will occur on the morning of Friday September 13th.
Teen Screen
We are excited to announce a new substance use prevention and intervention program called Teen Screen. This program has been implemented county wide at the secondary level. Teen Screen provides screening, supports, and resources to address the risk or use of alcohol and drugs. Participation is voluntary, confidential, and non-disciplinary. If you are concerned that your child may be thinking about (or already using) alcohol or drugs, please reach out to your child’s school counselor. For additional information about the BCPS Teen Screen Initiative, please contact: Debbie Somerville, Director of Health Services, at 443-809-6368.
Athletics Events - Safety Expectations
BCPS and THS are committed to providing a safe and supportive environment for all staff, students and spectators participating in athletic events. Athletic programs positively impact the community, and it is our expectation that student athlete and spectator behaviors reflect our core values of teamwork and sportsmanship. Attendance at athletic events is a privilege.
To ensure our sporting events remain safe, family-oriented events, we are asking all members of the BCPS community to do their part by:
- Reviewing expectations about appropriate conduct at sporting events.
- Once spectators have entered a game, there will be no readmittance if they choose to leave before the game has ended.
- Loitering at athletic events or on school grounds after the conclusion of the event will not be permitted.
- Anyone engaging in violent or criminal behavior at a sporting event will be removed from the premises immediately and not be permitted to return to any BCPS campus for athletics or extra-curricular activities for a period of no less than 90 days. Students will be subject to serious school and legal consequences.
- Spectators are expected to demonstrate positive and appropriate behavior at all times.
- Bringing only approved bags and items: Only the following type of bag is allowed: small clutch bags, no larger than 4.5" x 6.5" or approximately the size of a hand. These bags may be subject to search prior to entry. An exception will be made for medically necessary items and diaper bags. These bags may be subject to search prior to entry. No dangerous, prohibited, and inappropriate items are permitted at BCPS events.
- Immediately sharing with school officials any information that might compromise the safety of others.
- Arrange timely transportation to and from events for all unaccompanied high school students in attendance.

Career Navigator News
Welcome back Towson! I am excited to be our school’s Career Navigator, a newly added High School position with BCPS. I will be working with students to provide career resources and insights that align with their strengths, values, skills, and interests and create relevance and meaning that fosters academic achievement, future career success, and personal satisfaction. As a Career Navigator, I provide ALL students access to career pathway resources and networking opportunities that inform, connect, inspire, and guide. I collaborate with businesses, academic institutions, organizations, industry leaders, and the community that connect our students with job shadowing experiences, speaker events, interview days, and futures fairs (and anything else “career” focused that would promote student success). If you are interested in being a part of that mission, please email me at jbrotman@bcps.org, or go directly to the Google form (link here) to provide contact information and details about how you might like to assist with career exploration and awareness for our students.

CAEAC Meetings
Attendance Matters
Research has shown that attendance is a leading predictor of academic achievement and adult success. Students who find attending school important are more likely to attain goals like attending trade school, college, or getting a job. By showing up to school every day, students develop a positive work ethic and prepare for future success by developing healthy and productive habits.
Our attendance goals this year are for students to maintain at least a 94% attendance rate and to reduce chronic absenteeism. A student that misses 10% or more of school days in chronically absent. By missing just 2 days a month, a student will be chronically absent. Use the "Attendance Tracker" and "Parent Tips" below to support your student in maintaining satisfactory attendance. Additionally, we will send parents/guardians a "Weekly Attendance Report" each Friday afternoon so you can track your student's daily and period attendance.
Absent notes must be turned in within 5 days from the student returning to school. Please review the Towson High School 2024-2025 Operating Procedures document ("Attendance" section) for information on Absent notes, including how to submit them on FOCUS. Teachers are not required to provide makeup work for unexcused absences.
