The Torch
A deep dive into classical education

Welcome (Back) to The Torch!
Dear Nova Classical Community,
For those new and returning to Nova Classical Academy, I am happy to return to the place of learning with you through The Torch, a deep dive into classical education. This is a monthly newsletter whose intention is to maintain a healthy Nova Classical community by aligning our families behind the classical education model and to develop a consistent understanding of classical education.
This year, The Torch’s topics will be:
September: What are the Great Books?
October: What is Virtue education?
November: How can I support my child at home with the classical curriculum?
December: What is a seminar?
January: Is classical education secular?
February: How does the classical model apply to different learning styles?
March: What is the difference between the classics and classical education?
April: What is the Socratic Method?
May: How do our students take “old thoughts” and live in a new and ever-changing world?
While we set out on this journey together, I wanted to express how grateful I was last year to hear from many parents and community members about The Torch. Every interaction, question, and comment inspired me to dig deeper and expand my thinking in order to better serve the community. Please continue to engage with me via mjohnson@novaclassical.org.
I hope that you are looking forward to exploring these topics with me as we seek to know ourselves and know the world,
Dr. Missy Johnson
As a teacher and student of Latin and Greek, the classical model was a natural choice for me as an educator. I hold the teaching of grammar, logic, rhetoric, and virtues in high regard for learners of all ages and backgrounds. Nova Classical’s community model is inspiring, and I hope to bring thoughtfulness and openness to the Great Conversation.
