Appeals and Waitlist
Remember – Every college is different! The first thing you should do is go to the individual website or thoroughly read through the school’s communication emails.
A. APPEALS
Carefully read how to appeal on the college’s website, every school has its own process. Some schools do not allow appeals.
B. WAITLISTS
What to do if you are on a Waitlist?
It will be different for each school but most you have to communicate that you want to be on the waitlist. Some, make you write why you want to be on the waitlist. Ask if you can do anything to increase your chances
Do you need to commit to another college?
You need to submit a deposit to another college. If you get off the waitlist, you will lose your deposit costs. Do not assume you will get off the waitlist.
*Report D/F or Changes in Your Application
*Check your portals and emails often and do not wait to respond!
*Make sure you complete all financial aid requirements for each college

Choosing the Best Financial Aid to Accept (US Department of Education)
Keep the following in mind when you get an aid offer and are deciding which aid is the best to accept:
Accept Financial Aid in This Order
Free money first (e.g., scholarships, grants)
Earned money second (e.g., work-study)
Borrowed money last (e.g., federal student loans)
Explore Scholarships and Grants
Make sure you understand the conditions you need to meet to stay eligible for the scholarship or grant. For example, you might have to maintain a certain grade-point average to continue receiving a scholarship, or your TEACH Grant might turn into a loan if you don’t teach for a certain number of years under specific circumstances.
Explore Federal Work-Study
You don’t have to pay the money back, but you do have to work for it, so take into account that you’ll have to balance your time between work and studying. Bonus: Research has shown that students who work part-time jobs manage their time better than those who don’t!
Explore Federal Student Loans
You’ll have to repay the money with interest. Subsidized loans don’t generally start accruing (accumulating) interest until you leave school (or drop below half-time enrollment), so accept a subsidized loan before an unsubsidized loan. Next, accept an unsubsidized loan before a PLUS loan. Use Loan Simulator to calculate your federal student loan payments.
Explore Loans From Your State or Local College
You’ll have to repay the money with interest, and the terms of the loan might not be as good as those of a federal student loan. Be sure to read all the fine print before you borrow.
Explore Private Loans
You’ll have to repay the money with interest, and the terms and conditions of the loan are usually not as good as those of a federal student loan. Be sure to read all the fine print and borrow wisely.
More information hereLearn About the FAFSA Submission Summary (Replaces Student Aid Report) From Federal Student Aid
After your 2024–25 FAFSA form is submitted and processed, you’ll receive an email with instructions on how to access an online copy of your FAFSA Submission Summary—an electronic or paper document that summarizes the information you reported on your FAFSA form.
It includes your estimated eligibility for a Federal Pell Grant and federal student loans, your Student Aid Index (SAI), and whether you’ve been selected for verification.
The FAFSA Submission Summary replaces the Student Aid Report for the 2024–25 award year.
Getting Your FAFSA Submission Summary
View your online FAFSA Submission Summary by
logging in using your account username and password,
navigating to your account Dashboard,
selecting your processed FAFSA submission, and
selecting “View FAFSA Submission Summary.”
IF your FAFSA Submission Summary does not display an “Eligibility Overview” tab, it means your FAFSA requires action. Instead, your FAFSA Submission Summary will request information that you must provide before we can determine your eligibility for federal student aid.

Pro Tips for the 2024–25 FAFSA® Form - From StudentAid.gov
Use these tips to help you successfully complete the 2024–25 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®) form.
Tips for Preparing To Fill Out the FAFSA® Form
Get a StudentAid.gov account before filling out the FAFSA® form.
Before starting the FAFSA form, you’ll need to create a StudentAid.gov account to access and fill out the 2024–25 form.
Have your documents ready.
Be prepared so you can complete your form in one session. You might need the following documents as you fill out the 2024–25 form:
2022 Tax returns*
Records of child support received
Current balances of cash, savings, and checking accounts
Net worth of investments, businesses, and farms
*Starting with 2024–25 form, you'll be able to provide consent and approval to have most of your financial information imported directly from the IRS, but you should keep your tax return handy for additional questions.
Learn more about what you need to fill out your FAFSA form. If you gather these things in advance, you’ll be able to complete and submit your form quickly. Any contributors you invite to your form will need to provide the same information for themselves.
Have your contributor information ready.
To invite contributors to your FAFSA form, you’ll be asked to provide their
first and last name,
SSN (if they have one),
date of birth, and
email address (or mailing address, if they don’t have an SSN).
To avoid issues with your FAFSA form, list contributor information exactly as it appears on their Social Security card or legal identification card. Avoid using numbers or extra spaces when entering their name. If the contributor has a suffix in their name (e.g., John Paul Jr., or John Paul III), leave that out of the invitation. Also, if they have a StudentAid.gov account, make sure the personal information you enter exactly matches the information they provided when creating their account.
CHECK FINANCIAL AID DEADLINES AT COLLEGES YOU'VE APPLIED TO
Each college and university sets their own deadlines for financial aid applications to be submitted. Go to the financial aid office website for each of the out of state public and private schools that you applied to for their deadlines.
Create a FSA ID
What is an FSA ID?
It is a username and password combination that allows you to sign your FAFSA form electronically. Your FSA ID also can be used to access the myStudentAid app, sign loan contracts, and access certain information online.
Why do I need one, if I haven’t started the FAFSA Application?
Getting it ahead of time and using it to begin your FAFSA form on fafsa.gov or on the myStudentAid mobile app cuts down on errors and delays.
Does my parent(s)/Guardian(s) need to get one too?
YES! If you’re a dependent student, one of your parents whose information is reported on the FAFSA form will also need an FSA ID so that he or she can sign your application electronically.
(It is ok if your parents/guardians do not have SSN but they have to wait until December)
Where do I go to get an FSA ID?
