STAFF DRESS AS STUDENTS
The Month of February holds the annual celebration of Black History Month. In 1926, the scholar Carter G. Woodsen, initiated this celebration, a week to highlight the achievements of African American’s throughout history. He had established it in February to coincide with the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglas, two people who played important roles in the abolitionist movement. Abraham Lincoln was the 16th president who signed the Emancipation Proclamation and Frederick Douglas was a leader in the abolitionist movement who spoke out against slavery.
In 1976, President Gerald Ford expanded the week-long celebrations into the whole month of February. Today, we use the month of February to highlight the traditions, history, and achievements of the African American community, encouraging appreciation and understanding of their rich cultural impact and legacy across the world.
