KEY NEWS FOR EXPLORER FAMILIES
It was a wonderful week at Northwood! On Tuesday afternoon we had a visit from our Zone Superintendent, Angela Parham, and a team of district program specialists. We spent time together reviewing assessment, attendance, and discipline data, lesson planning, and got to visit classrooms to watch our Explorers and teachers excelling in action.
On Wednesday two Northwood shining stars, Anne Kiely (IRR teacher) and Beth Beach (METI para) were recognized and celebrated at the Fulton County Schools Legacy of Excellence luncheon. Both Anne and Beth were selected as our teacher and professional of the year last year. We are SO very fortunate that our students and staff benefit daily from their dedication, compassion and commitment. It is an honor to have them represent Northwood.
Finally, I wanted to let all families know that at some point next week our school will participate in a district required Medical Hold Drill led by our Cluster Nurse, Mrs. Brosmer. The drill will involve trained adults responding to a medical need using a medical mannequin while the students remain in their classrooms ‘on hold’. If you are interested in additional information on this and all drills, I’ve linked the FCS Safety site here.
With gratitude,
Heather Rucker
Principal
FOURTH GRADE EXPLORERS
Fourth graders have been learning about the water cycle recently in science class. They took on the role of a water molecule and went on a journey all around the world to better understand how the cycle works. Students were given a pipe cleaner and gathered beads around the room that represented different locations a water molecule could be. They visited clouds, streams, plants, animals, groundwater, mountains, and the ocean. Students discovered that water molecules may be in one location more often than others and can travel between many different areas to get through all phases of the water cycle. Our fourth graders had a great time learning about the journey of a water molecule!
FIFTH GRADE EXPLORERS
5th Grade - Science - 'Cells, cells, they're made of organelles!': In fifth grade this week we have been using microscopes and slide viewers to observe cells and their structures. We spent time in the school's science lab understanding how microscopes work with different levels of magnification and are essential for viewing cells. We learned that when English Scientist Robert Hooke first observed their size, he thought they looked like small rooms and called them cells.
GEORGIA READS DAY: A HUGE SUCCESS!
Our students had a fantastic time celebrating Georgia Reads Day! Classrooms tuned in to enjoy a fun fall book, The Leaf Thief, read aloud by Mrs. Rucker. We were also excited to participate in a live Reading Rally with former NFL player and author Malcolm Mitchell, broadcasting straight from the College Football Hall of Fame. Many classes got the chance to hear him read his inspiring book, My Very Favorite Book in the Whole Wide World.
In addition to all the reading fun, our teachers and students checked out 1,881 books in September! Keep up the great work, Explorers!
Library Reminder: If your student has lost or damaged a library book, you can now pay online (we no longer accept cash or checks). If you later find the lost book, please let Mrs. Bauer know. You’re welcome to keep the book, as we’re unable to offer refunds. To pay for a lost or damaged book click here: Media Center OSP

NORTHWOOD HEALTH AND PHYSICAL EDUCATION
During the month of October, Northwood 1st-5th grade students will participate in the Fit Georgia physical fitness assessment in Health and Physical Education class. Fit Georgia is a state-developed fitness assessment designed to measure various aspects of physical health, including Healthy Body Ranges, Aerobic Capacity, Flexibility, Muscular Strength, and Muscular Endurance. The assessment was created to meet Georgia standards and replaces the previous fitness assessment platform. The following assessments will be used to measure the various areas of physical health: 15m PACER (aerobic capacity), Push-Up (upper body strength and endurance), Curl-Up (abdominal strength and endurance), Back-Saver Sit and Reach (flexibility), and height/weight (healthy body). For information regarding the Fit Georgia assessment, please visit https://fitgeorgia.gadoe.org/About/.
