In like a lion, out like a lamb...
From our Librarian, Mrs. Smallidge...
Happy Read Across America Day! In library we joined the rest of the school in celebrating. The PAC very generously came to each library class and led students in a rousing game of book character BINGO. Please note that every child is coming home with a free book (and other goodies!) from the PAC. This is not a library book and should not be returned to school.
If you’re in the school, take a look at our wonderful “Look who got caught reading…” bulletin board in the hallway to see some familiar faces.
Attention Dog Man Fans! Dog Man: The Musical is coming to the Emerson Colonial Theatre in Boston on April 27th and 28th. It looks like a lot of fun!
For those following along at home, we finished our Mock Caldecott tournament and named Simon and the Better Bone as our favorite book of 2023. While Simon… didn’t win any real Caldecott honors, another book we read, Big by Vashti Harrison, did! We also spent a week talking about other awards given out by the American Library Association, focusing on the Schneider Award, given to the best book that deals with disability, and the Pura Belpre Award, given to the best book written about the Latinx cultural experience.
February saw us celebrating Black History Month. Kindergarten students celebrated Black joy by reading stories about families. First grade learned about Major Taylor, the first Black cycling champion, before doing a small research project on another Black athlete. Students did a wonderful job and learned about people most had never heard of before this project. For Valentine’s Day, students celebrated how much they love going to the school or public library by filling out hearts about their favorite part. This made an adorable bulletin board in our school hallway. We also spent a week talking about presidents for President’s Day. Kindergarten made connections between their teacher’s job and what the real president does. First grade learned about Abraham Lincoln and practiced brainstorming using a mind map.
Happy almost Spring!

What is World Down Syndrome Day?
World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD) , 21 March, is a global awareness day which has been officially observed by the United Nations since 2012.
The date for WDSD being the 21st day of the 3rd month, was selected to signify the uniqueness of the triplication (trisomy) of the 21st chromosome which causes Down syndrome.
Some of us are raising awareness and celebrating our differences by wearing crazy socks on Thursday, March 21.

Won't you be my Neighbor?
Just like you!
I've always wanted to live in a
Neighborhood with you.
So let's make the most of this beautiful day;
Since we're together we might as well say,
Would you be mine?
Could you be mine?
Won't you be my neighbor?
