School Newsletter Term 4, Week 6
Friday 22nd November 2024
Kia ora West End whānau,
What an incredible performance from our kapa haka group at the Regent! Competing against 26 other kura, our students demonstrated exceptional talent, mana, and pride in representing our school. A huge thank you to our kaiako for their unwavering support of this kaupapa. A special mention must go to Whaea Karen, Whaea Vicki, Matua Rhys, and Pa Oriwa for the countless hours spent in rehearsals and the careful organisation that made this event such a success.
While it was disappointing to postpone athletics due to the weather, we are eagerly looking forward to rescheduling this event for next Friday. Athletics is always a highlight of our school calendar, and we can’t wait to see our tamariki giving their all on the track and field. Fingers crossed for fine weather this time.
Meanwhile, our teachers are fully immersed in the end-of-year assessments and report writing. This is a busy but vital time as we reflect on each student’s learning journey and prepare to share these with whānau. The insights gained will help us set goals and directions for 2025, ensuring every student continues to thrive.
Our Board of Trustees is also hard at work, planning for the upcoming academic year. From strategic goals to school improvements, they are making decisions that will shape the future of our kura. We’re grateful for their dedication to fostering a supportive and enriching environment for both students and staff.
Our PTA continues to go above and beyond, fundraising to meet a range of school requests. Whether it’s providing resources for classrooms or enhancing our facilities, the PTA’s efforts make a real difference. We deeply appreciate your support, whether it’s through attending events, volunteering, or making contributions. Every bit helps us achieve our goals for the school.
As the year progresses, we encourage you to stay engaged with the school’s activities. Our app and newsletters remain the best way to stay informed about what’s happening, including updates on events, successes, and key dates.
Thank you, as always, for being part of our vibrant school community. Your support and encouragement are what make West End School such a special place for our tamariki.
Nga mihi,

Kapa Haka Rōpū
KO WAI RA KO WAI RA!!! KO URUMUTU E NGUNGURU NEI KO URUMUTU E TANGI NEI!!
What an amazing performance Te Kura o Urumutu presented yesterday. As lead kaiako of this amazing kapa I have no words to explain how proud I am of how much whakamana, mana aotūroa, manaakitanga and kotahitanga each and everyone of our tauira displayed. From basic kapa haka skills to working together over 1 and a half terms to produce haka at an amazing standard. Proud! We placed 14th overall out of 26 teams - What an amazing achievement!!
Special Mention to Pā Oriwa who gave up a lot of his time to help tutor our kapa. E rere ana ngā mihi e hoa and congratulations on the placings of the other kura you share your amazing skills with.
I am excited for all you kaihaka to see where you are headed in Te Ao Haka especially our Year 6 tauira - Kia Kaha tamariki mā, Karawhiua!!

Tipuranga Mahi
Room 17
Museum in a Box
Tipuranga has been learning about Palmerston North and comparing the past and present.
A big thankyou to Pru and Danny from Te Manawa who visited the Tipuranga team to share their museum in a box. We loved learning about te marae o hine (the square). There was so much to learn about. We have been given a challenge to find this sign in the square with our family.
Muhamad and Imran made clock towers after learning about the clock tower in the square.
Puāwaitanga Mahi
Room 7
In Room 7 we have been working with Room 15 to support the Tipuranga students to get ready to transition into Puawaitanga in 2025. We have done buddy reading, buddy Literacy and buddy Maths. It has been a great way to show the value of Kotahitanga and Manaakitaga - building relationships and showing kindness.
Te Wao Nui o Tāne Mahi
Room 3
Room 3 has been busy exploring poetry this term. We have been working on some haiku poems. A haiku is a three-line poem with a 5-7-5 syllable structure. We chose a variety of different topics to base our haiku around. We have loved the creative way we have been able to use our vocabulary and to apply the ‘show, don’t tell’ approach to ensure our language is descriptive.
Senior Camp 2025
Last week, Te Wao Nui O Tāne went to Forest Lakes for camp. It was a blast! We had so many activities we could participate in that pushed us out of our comfort zone but were filled with fun!
The mudslide was one of my favourite things at camp! The mudslide was very fast and I was slipping all over the place. It had a big bump that every time I went over I pretended it was a rift in space and time and I went to the future. At the bottom of the mudslide, there was some kind of weed that felt wavy when I landed. I also loved the waterslide. It was also fast, in fact it was faster than the mudslide! When I went down and splashed into the water I lost my goggles but didn't even notice! From under the water, the parent helpers passed me the floatation ring and my goggles. They pulled me back in really quickly to the bank. - By Lloyd
The mudslide was my favourite thing despite my new scar. It was really fast and I also pretended I was going through time over the bumps. Every time I got to the bottom of the mudslide I made a huge splash in the water and was completely covered in mud and pond weed. - By Tobey
I loved the gladiator and confidence course. Gladiator was fun because I felt like I was flying. I loved the confidence course because I was good at the obstacles and swinging on the tyres. - By Momo
Camp has been a highlight of our year and will be kept in our memory forever.
