Santa Clara School Newsletter
Term 3, Week 6 - Friday 23rd August, 2024
Principal Update
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
I hope this newsletter finds you well as we are just over halfway through Term 3! As we embark on this journey together, I want to highlight an essential aspect of our students’ development that often doesn't receive enough attention—healthy relationships. Our staff are currently learning about Berry Street with other programs such as URStrong to enable the students to develop and foster healthy relationships and build coping skills when they go through times of difficulty. The reason our school has focused on this area for 2024 is to ensure that students firstly feel loved and supported before academic progress is made. If a child does not feel loved, cared and supported both at home and at school, he/she will not truly fulfil their potential academically and socially. Below is some key information that you may want to discuss with your child at home as the topic has been highlighted at our school assemblies over the past few weeks.
Why Healthy Relationships Matter
Healthy relationships form the foundation of a happy, successful and balanced life. They provide our students with a sense of security, support and belonging which is crucial for their emotional and social growth. When children understand and practice healthy relationship skills, they are better equipped to navigate challenges, communicate effectively and build positive connections with others.
Key Elements of Healthy Relationships
1. Respect: Teaching our children to respect themselves and others is vital. Respect means valuing each other's feelings, opinions and boundaries. In our school, we encourage students to show kindness and consideration in all their interactions.
2. Communication: Open and honest communication is the cornerstone of any strong relationship. We work with students to develop their listening skills and express their thoughts and feelings in a constructive manner.
3. Empathy: Understanding and sharing the feelings of others fosters deep, meaningful connections. We emphasise the importance of empathy through classroom activities and discussions helping students relate to and support one another.
4. Trust: Trust is built over time and is essential for a strong relationship. We promote a trustworthy environment where students feel safe to share their concerns and seek help when needed.
5. Conflict Resolution: Disagreements are natural but how we handle them is crucial. Our approach teaches students to address conflicts respectfully and work towards mutually beneficial solutions through restorative practice conversations.
How You Can Support Healthy Relationships at Home
1. Model Positive Behaviour: Children learn a lot from observing their parents and guardians. Demonstrating respect, empathy and effective communication in your own relationships sets a powerful example.
2. Encourage Open Dialogue: Create a home environment where your child feels comfortable discussing their feelings and experiences. Listen actively and provide guidance on how to handle various social situations.
3. Teach Problem-Solving Skills: Help your child develop strategies for resolving conflicts and making decisions. Practice these skills together through role-playing scenarios or discussing real-life situations.
4. Promote Emotional Literacy: Support your child in identifying and expressing their emotions. Discuss different feelings and how they might impact relationships emphasising the importance of managing emotions constructively.
I would also like to take this time to acknowledge all the father/father figures in our students lives. Father’s Day is on Sunday 1st September. Father's Day is a special occasion dedicated to celebrating fathers and father figures, recognising their contributions and the impact they have on their families.
Enjoy your weekend with your friends and family.
Kind regards

URSTRONG Friend-O-Meter
During Weeks 7-8, the students will be focusing on the URSTRONG Friend-O-Meter. The Friend-O-Meter is a visual tool that helps children assess how they are feeling in their friendships. It is normal for friendships to sometimes dip into that red zone if friends are having a friendship fire (friendship fact #1), but it is important that friendships move back into the green zone. We encourage children to spend more time with friends that make them feel in the green zone and recognise that not all friendships are good for them.
