Principal's Message
Hello Duniway Families,
Happy Friday to you and hope you have had a good week. We have had a good week at school and it has been a pleasure to continue to enjoy this pleasant fall weather (even with a little rain mixed in :). As it is my first school year at Duniway, I have enjoyed seeing the vibrant colors in our neighborhood and finally switched to wearing a light down jacket in the mornings this week.
One item I wanted to address in my message this week is the release of student assessment results from 23-24 Smarter Balanced Assessment (also known in Oregon as the "OSAS assessment"). The results of the 23-24 OSAS assessments were made public last week for all schools in Oregon. Overall at Duniway, our results in Math and English Language Arts remained at high levels (68% of students in grades 3-5 scoring "Proficient" or above in Math and 70% of students in grades 3-5 scoring "Proficient" or above in English Language Arts). We are always aiming to grow and improve and like all Portland Public Schools, we have created a school plan that describes specific strategies we are using to improve our student outcomes. Typically PPS would mail individual student score reports home, but this year student reports are available on ParentVue. Please read this communication regarding how to access a student report: https://bit.ly/3zRTre4. Parents are also able to access other types of assessments (i.e. MAP assessments) though ParentVue, To read a report of the release of OSAS scores for PPS (including a video from Superintendent Armstrong), please see this link: https://bit.ly/3Ue19WG.
Looking ahead to next week, we will have our second planned early release day on Wednesday, October 23 and students are dismissed @ 11:50am. We will have our second school wide assembly in the morning. In the afternoon, teachers and staff will be making a deeper exploration of our new Science curriculum Amplify. I wish you all a restful weekend!
Sincerely
John (aka- Dr. Melvin)
Picture Day is Monday, October 21!

Review and Update Your Student's Information - The DEADLINE was 9/30/24
Each year parents and/or guardians are asked to review and update the information on file for their students. This information can be reviewed, edited and submitted online via PPS ParentVUE.
Beginning on 10/1/24, if you have not submitted Online Verification, you will receive a message prompting you to complete the process. You will not be able to log into ParentVue until this step is completed. This means you will not be able to view Report Cards!
Benefits of verifying online via ParentVUE:
- Complete yearly verification of your student's information
- Update your communication and language preferences
- Ensure your school has the most up-to-date information
- Save paper and time
Kids lead the way - Plastic Recycling
Duniway is organizing a plastic film drive this fall where students and families can help keep hard-to-recycle plastic out of landfills, leading the way to a future without waste. There will be a large plastic bag/bin you can place plastic bags, shipping envelopes, and food packaging.
The bin will be at Duniway 10/18 - 11/8. Bring your plastic film in to recycle!
Plastic film is used to make things like Composite Deck boards, a durable board made from wood fibers and recycled plastics.
Also - as families join Ridwell at home using this page, Duniway will earn meaningful ways to engage in environmental education. Sign up or track the school's progress here. https://get.ridwell.com/duniway
