M-STEP Testing is Around the Corner

Each spring, the State of Michigan and the US Department of Education (USDE) require us to assess students in certain subject areas through the M-STEP, PSAT and SAT. The assessments provide the district with a snapshot of student achievement at the state, district, and building levels. Individual student results will also be shared with parents.
The tentative assessment dates for M-Step are as follows:
3rd Grade

Thursday, May 1 - ELA Day 2
Tuesday, May 6 - Math
4th Grade

Tuesday, April 29 - Math
5th Grade
Wednesday, April 16 - ELA Day 1
Thursday, April 17 - ELA Day 2

Please ensure that your child is well rested on their testing day. They should come to school with a fully charged iPad .
Please note- We have makeup days built into our testing schedule, so if your child is exhibiting any symptoms of illness on their testing day- be sure to keep them home.
Also, due to recent updates in State testing procedures, cell phones, smart watches, and any bluetooth device (including headphones) MUST be secured during testing. We encourage students to leave these devices home on testing days when possible. When not possible, devices will be powered down and secured during testing

Our first annual 'Eaglefest', a big end-of-year school celebration, is just around the corner, and we need your help to make it a success! One of the highlights of the event will be our raffles, and we’re asking for donations to help create exciting prizes for our students and families.
Every donation—big or small—will help us create a fun and memorable experience for our school community!
Please send your donation to the main office by Friday, April 25, 2025, labeled with your family name and “Eaglefest Raffle.”
If you own a business or know of a local business that may be willing to make a donation for us to raffle off, please indicate that in the 'Other Donations' section on the signup below. All businesses that make donations will be acknowledged in our school newsletter for the upcoming year. If you need a letter with our Tax ID, please contact the front office.
All contributions are greatly appreciated and go directly toward making this event a joyful celebration for our students!
Thank you for your continued support and generosity! 💛
6th Grade Second Step Communication
Dear 6th-Grade Famiies,
Over the next several weeks, your child will be discussing bullying as part of Second Step® Middle School. Bullying is at its peak in middle school, and research indicates that taking proactive steps to address bullying will help reduce occurrences of it in school.
Second Step Middle School is designed to support your child in developing the knowledge and
skills to help stop bullying. Students will learn how to recognize bullying in various contexts, how to use strategies to stand up safely to bullying, and how to seek help if they or someone they know is being bullied.
Here are some key definitions your child will be learning:
- Bullying: intentional physical, verbal, or social aggression. It’s often repeated over time and occurs when there’s a real or perceived power imbalance.
- Bystander: anyone who’s aware that bullying is happening
- Online bullying: the use of technology to harass, threaten, or intimidate another person
- Physical bullying: hurting someone’s body or possessions
- Relational bullying: hurting someone’s reputation or relationships, such as by excluding them
- Upstander: someone who stands up for a person being bullied
- Verbal bullying: saying or writing mean things about someone
We encourage students to report any instances of bullying they witness or experience to you and to trusted adults at our school. Please contact the main office or your child's classroom teacher if you need support in reporting or dealing with bullying.
Additionally, if you have any questions about Second Step Middle School, please don’t hesitate
to contact me for more information.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Wiegand

Parking Lot Reminders
Please Do Not Park/Idle/Stop in Marked Areas
- Please adhere to our 5mph speed limit in our parking lot. We've recently received several reports of cars driving too fast in the parking lot at arrival/dismissal time. Please drive slowly and use caution!
- We do not have crossing guards for our parking lot. Our Y5-2 students must be accompanied by an adult through the parking lot. However, it is highly recommended that all parents park their cars and walk up to retrieve their students to escort them through the lot at dismissal time.
- Unfortunately, we don’t have a “bus loop” at Edison, which also limits our ability for a curbside drop off/pick up lane. Our transportation department needs us to stop stopping/parking/idling in the areas marked with a red 'x' (essentially, every turn/curve of the lot) because the busses cannot get through.
- Please park in a designated parking spot at arrival and dismissal, while you wait to drop off/pick up your children.
- All Y5-2nd grade students must be picked up by an adult at their doors.
- 3rd-6th grade students are dismissed out their doors and may navigate the parking lot as their parents see fit. Please note, our staff does our best to help kids cross when possible, but we do not have designated crossing guards in our lot. The safest option will always be for parents to park, walk up, drop off/retreive their child(ren), and navigate the lot with their child(ren).
- At dismissal time, please don’t sit idle in driving lane while waiting for your student.
PTO Updates
Introducing Our PTO Officers
This year, our PTO has been led by the following officers. As always, we're so appreciative of the parents that take time out of their lives to enrich ours! Please consider joining forces with the amazing moms below to help make Edison a happier place!
- President: Sarah Moaut
- Vice President: Lisa Heckman
- Treasurer: Cierra Prophit
- Secretary: Melissa Loder
We will be voting for officer positions for the 2025-26 school year at our next PTO Meeting on Thursday, April 10 at 4:00PM in the Edison Media Center.
If you have interest in running for an officer position, please contact Mrs. Wiegand.
A Few School Policies & Procedures To Make Note Of:
Attendance
Your child's lifelong school/work attendance habits are being deeply established right now. Parents should make every effort to get their child to school by 8:30AM each day and allow them to stay for the full duration of every day. Excessive absences, tardies, and early dismissals hugely impact a child's confidence, social interactions, and school performance.
Birthday Treats
Birthday students may bring store-bought, individually wrapped treats/snacks or trinkets to distribute to their classmates to be taken home. Please do not send in a tray of cupcakes, homemade baked goods, pizza, etc intending for them to be consumed at school- as many students have dietary restrictions that need to be closely monitored by their parents & school staff. All treats/trinkets will be sent home with students.
Cell Phones
Hot Food Deliveries
Please do not plan to drop off "hot lunches" for your child at lunch time. This includes parents/family members dropping off fast food and/or Door Dashing food for their children. It is very logistically challenging to ensure that your child receives the food delivery on time and often results in students spending much of their lunch period awaiting a delivery.
