Era Counselor Newsletter - October 2024
It's hard to believe the first six weeks of the school year have gone by so fast! As we enter our next grading period, let's reflect on the progress we have made and take a look at some steps we can take toward continued school success. Let's work together to stay motivated and focused!
Keep up healthy routines.
- Routines that keep you healthy support academic achievement. Your sleeping, exercise, eating, and screen time habits can affect your performance in school.
- Starting the day with a well-balanced breakfast can help you concentrate, giving you the energy you need to focus and learn in class.
- An hour of physical activity each day will help keep you healthy and energetic.
- Find the right time for completing homework. For some of you, this may be right after school. For others, it may be best for you to take a quick break after school before starting homework.
- Gather any necessary supplies and materials before you sit down to work.
- Use a calendar to keep track of assignments. Crossing completed items off a list or calendar will give you a sense of accomplishment.
- Parents, when your student is finished, be sure their homework is complete; however, avoid correcting mistakes for them. Homework shows teachers skills that have been mastered and the areas in which your student may need additional support.
- Fit learning into everyday activities. For example, cooking is great practice for measuring and understanding fractions.
- Plan outings that relate to school subjects. Read historic markers. Pick up brochures from trips. Check local theater groups to see if there are any plays based on stories you are reading in school.
Most importantly, celebrate your successes - no matter how small they may seem!
October Events & Initiatives
October is National Bullying Prevention Awareness Month
October marks National Bullying Prevention Awareness Month. We know that bullying impacts a student’s mental health, self-esteem, and overall well-being. By raising awareness, we can create safer, more supportive school environments. Together, we can empower one another to stand up against bullying and promote a culture of kindness, empathy, and respect. Check out the resources below to join us in raising awareness and taking meaningful steps toward a bully-free school.
Unity Day - October 16, 2024
Started by PACER's National Bullying Prevention Center in October 2011, Unity Day is the signature event of National Bullying Prevention Month. This is a day when we can come together to send a visible message of building commUNITY through kindness, acceptance, and inclusion. The call to action is simple: wear and share the color orange. This vibrant statement becomes a conversation starter, showing support for students who have been bullied and for bullying prevention.
R.E.D. Ribbon Week - October 23-31, 2024
DID YOU KNOW? Children of parents who talk to their teens regularly about drugs are 42% less likely to use drugs than those who don't; yet, only a quarter of teens report having these conversations.
Red Ribbon Week® (October 23-31), the oldest and largest drug prevention campaign in the nation, is your opportunity to get the ongoing conversation started. This year’s theme is Life Is A Movie, Film Drug Free.™ Visit www.redribbon.org to learn more about Red Ribbon Week® and get tips for talking to your kids about drugs. The life you save may be that of your own child or a dear friend.
Want a fun way to start or continue the conversation about drugs with your children AND have a chance to win an iPad? National Family Partnership is sponsoring a photo contest. This contest is free, simple and you could win an iPad and $1,000 for our school!! Log onto www.redribbon.org and find out more.
How we Participate at Era Elementary
Welcome to Really Excellent Decisions (R.E.D.) Week - a week aimed at helping our elementary students develop important decision-making skills! Throughout the week, we will engage in fun activities and lessons with Mrs. Martindale that encourage thoughtful choices, problem-solving, celebrating friendships, and healthy habits - like proper nutrition, rest, and exercise. By fostering these skills early on, we empower our students to navigate challenges and make positive contributions to their school and community. Our goal is to inspire our Hornets to make excellent decisions everyday!
And...with dress up days of course!!! Check out the image below for this year's themes.
Family Challenge
We would like to experience some of the great things that happen when families spend more time together. Hornet families will have the opportunity to participate in a monthly challenge from September-May. Watch for detailed information to come home with your child(ren).
When your child(ren) completes the monthly challenge and completes the Google Form, they are entered into a monthly drawing AND an end-of-year drawing for a Family Challenge Grand Prize Package!
We also invite you to share photos of your family challenge activities by emailing them to your campus counselor.
The monthly challenge and Google Form can be accessed by clicking on the button below.
