Mustang News - March 22, 2024
From The Principal
We’ve had a wonderful week at MSHS! I have been so inspired by students’ learning and leadership: Athletic Training students writing Emergency Action Plans with Mr. Morin, Theater students working with Ms. Harms to design advertising for the spring play, and Digital Photo students working with Mr. Bonner to create narratives for their photos!
Jessie Nunley and I also had the opportunity to present to our Manitou Kiwanis Club about MSHS and celebrate the hard work of our students and staff! We would like to express a huge thank you to Kiwanis and the many members who regularly support our students across Key Club, scholarship opportunities, our Home Build, and so much more!
Also, please join us in cheering on our Steel Mustangs Robotics Team as they compete at the state competition! We sent them off in style on Wednesday with a joyous school-wide state sendoff.
Happy Spring Break!

Attention Students and Families
Dear Students and Families,
We have some important upcoming testing dates to put on your calendars for when we return from Spring Break. For our 9th-11th graders the upcoming state assessments will be the SAT Suite of assessments on Wednesday, April 17, 2024. There will be no school on this day for 12th graders. We will offer make-up testing on April 23rd, 2024, during the regular school day. Furthermore, our 10th and 11th graders will be engaging in an additional assessment this spring: the ACT Career Readiness Assessment for 10th graders and the Science CMAS for 11th graders, both of which will occur April 9th, 2024. There will be no school on this day for 9th and 12th graders.
Testing for students without accommodations will conclude at approximately 11:30 on these days, followed by lunch for students from 11:30-12:00 pm, and students will be dismissed at 12:00 pm. Families are asked to pick up students anytime after testing concludes at 11:30 am. Please be aware that bus routes will continue at normal time 3:20, but we will have supervision available for students who cannot be picked up until then.
All of the aforementioned tests are state assessments, except for the ACT Career Readiness test, which MSSD14 gives to sophomores to assess their readiness for post-secondary life and to help them fulfill the Graduation Guidelines from the state of Colorado.
While we will accommodate students for makeup assessments, it is most ideal for your student to be at school for the original testing day. Research shows students do better on testing day and it will ensure they aren’t pulled from regular scheduled class time to complete make up testing. Manitou Springs School District encourages full participation of every student in assessments.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the School Assessment Coordinator: Jessie Nunley (jnunley@mssd14.org)

Congratulations Robotics Team!
Our Robotics team traveled to Tulsa Oklahoma to compete last week. They went against 43 other schools from across the country and took 2nd place! Way to go Mustangs!
Congratulations Knowledge Bowl!
Our students placed 32nd out of a field of 60 teams at the state championship. With over 200 teams in the state, that puts our kids in the top 17% of all teams. Truly a remarkable feat! It was rewarding to see the hard work they put in (the last month they really hit the gas and created mini-lectures on all sorts of topics) and to see the knowledge they have gained in all of your classrooms come alive in the spirit of competition!

School Bus Safety
We recently are receiving complaints from our bus drivers that vehicles are not stopping and passing buses when they are stopped to pick up or drop off students even though they have their flashing lights and stop sign out.
