School Board Highlights
January 28, 2025
Celebrating Success
Second-grade students put their problem-solving skills on display this week as they teamed up with school board members to tackle a math challenge using the Building Thinking Classrooms approach. Students from second grade teachers Allyson Ward and Lisa Popjoy’s classes worked side by side with board members, demonstrating how this innovative method makes math more engaging and meaningful.
Survey of Teacher Conferences
The results of a staff and parent survey about moving fall conferences to October was shared with the Board. Overall, the results indicated that teachers and parents liked having conferences before report cards were released to families. The parents main concern with virtual conferences was the limited amount of time they had to discuss their student’s progress with the teacher. Superintendent Scott Warren, who shared the results with the Board, said he would look at this concern for fall 2025 conferences. February conferences will not be altered, he said.
Student Involvement
The Board has been moving forward with including student voice in school board meeting discussions. The Board is considering inviting next year’s eighth-graders to submit letters of interest for the non-voting position that would be introduced in the fall 2025. Students will act in an advisory role to the Board representing their classmates’ point of view on certain topics.
School Calendars
The Board reviewed the 2025-2026 and 2026-2027 school calendars. Their main focus was aligning D103’s calendar closer to Stevenson High School’s first and last days of school. The D103 Calendar Committee will review the calendars before the Board discusses them again at a future meeting.
Vision 2030
The Board approved Vision 2030, a vision for public education in Illinois created by educational leaders from statewide organizations.
Vision 2030 prioritizes the following key areas
Future-Focused Learning: Redefining student success to equip children for a rapidly evolving world.
Shared Accountability: Shifting beyond standardized testing to assess student growth and proficiency over time.
Predictable Funding: Securing sustainable financial resources to support high-quality education and the technology needed to meet modern economic demands.
Administrative Contract
The Board approved the administrative contract for incoming superintendent Dr. Katie Reynolds for the 2026-2029 school years.
