Greg Pizzoli Author Visit 4/20
Award-winning author Greg Pizzoli has an upcoming series debut called BALONEY coming out in April. BALONEY is a new young graphic novel series for ages 5-8. Here's a link to a recent review and a little bit about this new series:
On Monday Meet Baloney! This book is about him. And also Peanut the horse, his best friend. There's Bizz the bumblebee, too, of course. And Krabbit. He'd rather not be here, but what can you do?
In this graphic novel for young readers, watch our pig protagonist perform some questionable magic, cheer him on as he braves the swimming pool, and root for Baloney and his friends when a case of the blues gets him down.
Brought to you by Geisel Medalist Greg Pizzoli, these delightful tales will get kids giggling in no time!
Order Forms to purchase autographed copies of his books will be sent home or are attached here. Order forms will be due Thursday, April 2nd. Please Email bettina_curl@beaverton.k12.or.us for any questions.
A note from our School Nurse
What are head lice? Head lice are tiny insects about the size of a sesame seed. Lice do not jump or fly; they do not have wings. They live close to the human scalp. The eggs, also called nits, are tiny, tear-drop shaped eggs are attached to the hair shaft. Nits often appear like dandruff but cannot be removed easily or brushed off. An itchy head is a common symptom of lice. Although lice can be annoying and icky, lice are not dangerous and are not known to spread disease.
Who is affected by head lice? Head lice are not related to cleanliness or hygiene. Head lice are mostly spread by direct head-to-head contact—for example, during play at home, slumber parties, sports activities or camp. Less often, lice are spread via objects that have been in recent contact with a person with head lice, such as hats, scarves, hair ribbons, combs, brushes, stuffed animals or bedding.
What to do if you suspect your child has head lice? If you think your child has head lice, it’s important to talk to a healthcare provider or pharmacist to discuss the best treatment approach for your family. Please contact your child’s school, as they have information regarding treatment and prevention of head lice.
Beaverton School District: COVID-19 Update
While the spread of coronavirus is troubling, we must remind ourselves that fear, rumors, and stigma do nothing to stop the further spread of the disease. Viruses do not discriminate. In the Beaverton School District, we value racial equity and social justice. Our responsibility is to provide welcoming, safe, and inclusive schools where every student can learn, and we do not tolerate hate speech or acts of discrimination. This is especially important at a time when fears about the virus can too easily foster suspicion without regard for facts. Please keep our core values in mind, continue to treat everyone in our community with respect and recognize the dignity and humanity of everyone.
We have created a webpage with resources and information about COVID-19, including a list of BSD-specific daily updates.
Here is a resource for talking to children about COVID-19:
NASP/NASN Resource for parents: Talking to Children about COVID-19 (available only in English & Spanish):
● Talking to Children about COVID-19: A Parent Resource
● Hable con sus hijos sobre el COVID-19: Un recurso para padres
The best source of information is the Oregon Health Authority. Their site also has links to the CDC and other resources. Oregon Health Authority officials continue to recommend people in Oregon take everyday precautions to prevent the spread of many respiratory illnesses, including COVID-19 and influenza:
Wash your hands often with soap and water for 20 seconds. If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol.
Cover your coughs and sneezes with your sleeve or a tissue and then throw the tissue in the trash.
Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands
Avoid contact with sick people and stay home if you are sick
You may refer to the Washington County Should My Child Go To School for guidance on keeping your children home from school.
If you have individual health concerns or questions, please seek the guidance of your healthcare provider or refer to the guidance being provided by Washington County Public Health and the Oregon Health Authority.
