Student of the Month for Perseverance
Perseverance is pushing yourself to work through challenges and obstacles. We have an amazing group of students here at Sewell. Below are students nominated by their teacher, for Student of the Month for Perseverance.
Ms. Barraza: Israel shows consistent commitment to his classroom assignments. For an example, Israel will be working on writing a sentence, and while others around will move on to another classroom activity, Israel will continue to work at it till he gets it done. Israel, you're a great example of modeling to your classmates the rigor and stamina of completing work and never giving up. We're very proud of you!
Ms. Hanson: Even when things feel hard, Teddy keeps trying and never giving up. He is strong and he can do anything he sets his mind to!
Mrs. Alvarado-Wells: Congratulations Jayden on earning the Character Strong award for perseverance. You have shown perseverance by never giving up. Whether it is sounding out new words, tackling tricky math problems, or learning a new skill, you always put your best foot forward, proving that challenges are just steppingstones to success. Keep pushing forward - you can achieve anything you set your mind to!
Ms. Dolan: Jaden demonstrates perseverance in his academics by pushing himself to learn new things and challenging himself to work independently. He is also an example of perseverance in his interactions with others. He pushes himself to share his feelings with others even though that is a challenge for him. He is a great example of working to overcome obstacles. His continued hard work is an inspiration to himself and others.
Ms. Ioannou: Hailey shows perseverance by never giving up, even when things are hard. Hailey works really hard sounding out tricky words, solving tough math problems and finishing her writing. Even when things are challenging, Hailey keeps trying, asks for help when needed, and doesn't give up. Her hard work and can-do attitude help her succeed. Way to go, Hailey!
Ms. Mendoza: I would like to recognize Lucy for the character trait of perseverance. Lucy rises to every challenge presented to her. She will not stop until she completes the task to the best of her ability. She’s got grit, she doesn’t quit!
Ms. Petrino: Sage demonstrates perseverance every day. He works hard on his class works and tries to improve himself! As a result, he improved his reading level and iReady math and reading scores! Keep it up and never stop trying your best.
Ms. Hook: Ira is the student of the month for perseverance. He always puts forth a continued effort to work his hardest and pay attention when the classwork gets hard. Ira actively participates, asking questions and raising his hand to volunteer on a regular basis. He turns all of his work in and tries his hardest on all classroom tasks. I am very proud of Ira.
Ms. Ryan: Landon truly deserves this award. Throughout this year Landon has demonstrated great determination, resilience, optimism and self-encouragement. He never gives up when encountering a problem he can’t solve. As I give immediate feedback to my students while working on math, he immediately redirects himself to solve the answer and will immediately call me and says, “Ms. Ryan, I figured it out!” It doesn’t matter if it is the subject of Math, ELA, or any other subject we may be working on. He always reflects belief in himself. Even when he is sick and out for a day or two, he comes back determined to catch up and does always catches up. I’m very proud of Landon for his ability to never give up on himself and doing whatever it takes to be successful.

What is Chronic Absenteeism?
Chronic absenteeism (missing just 2 days per month or 18 days over the school year) can be an early warning sign of academic trouble starting as early as kindergarten and preschool. Missing too many days can lead to struggling to read proficiently by the end of third grade and dropping out in high school, research shows.

OMA Happenings in February
Sewell has a new dance teacher, Molly Rice. She will be working with our Kinders and 2nd grades.
This month in OMA is very busy. We will be singing songs and making crafts for Valentine's Day as well as completing our annual unit on Civil rights music and art. We will also be participating in activities centered around rodeo and the history of Tucson including "Lasso Art" and square dancing.
After-school choir is back in full swing working on songs that will be presented by our Sewell Choir as well as 20 other choirs from TUSD in our annual OMA Showcase being held May 3rd at Palo Verde.
Here are some drawings from Mrs. Barazza's class sequencing the events from The Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle.
