Hazardous Waste Event
American Legion Post 189 - New Members Needed
All Veterans are welcome.
Meetings are held the 2nd Thursday of the month 7pm, located at La Center Church.
The American Legion was chartered and incorporated by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic veterans organization devoted to mutual helpfulness. American Legion Post 189 (La Center, WA) was founded post World War II. Due to ageing Veterans our local post has seen a steady decline in membership. If you would like to learn more about the American Legion please join them at one of their meetings or contact Al Filla at (360) 713-8932.
Saturday, May 25th at 9am, you will find local American Legion members handing out poppies at La Center Market Place (chevron). Donations and conversations greatly appreciated.
The Story of the Poppy
On the Friday before Memorial Day, wear a red poppy to honor the fallen and support the living who have worn our nation's uniform.
The red poppy is a nationally recognized symbol of sacrifice worn by Americans since World War I to honor those who served and died for our country in all wars. It reminds Americans of the sacrifices made by our veterans while protecting our freedoms.
Led by the American Legion Auxiliary, each year members of The American Legion Family distribute poppies with a request that the person receiving the flower make a donation to support the future of veterans, active-duty military personnel and their families with medical and financial needs.

In Flanders Fields
by John McCrae, 1915
In Flanders Fields, the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
