Principal's Message 9.2.22
What a wonderful first week! We are thankful for the joy you and your children bring to our school. Yesterday I heard the following from students:
- "I love the lunch today. Wait, I love the lunch every day so far. I love this whole school!" - 3rd grader
- "The best thing so far is meeting all these new friends." - 2nd grader
- "I'll miss you when I go home." - Kindergartener to his teacher after the first day
And I heard several staff members share how grateful they are to be part of this community.
We look forward to connecting with parents (only) at Back to School Night next week. See details below. And we hope you'll complete the new volunteer application also described below.
If you can't find what you need to know here, please feel free to email or call our office with questions.
Be kind,
Principal Jennie Knapp

Back To School Night
We look forward to welcoming parents and guardians at Lake Grove for our Back To School Night on Wednesday 9/7 from 5:30-7pm. This event is for parents only. Please arrange for your children to be able to stay home safely. The Lake Grove playgrounds are also closed during this event.
We'll begin with all our parents in a whole school assembly and then offer two classroom sessions during which you are invited to hear directly from your child’s teacher. We offer two sessions so that parents of siblings can attend multiple teacher’s presentations. This is an excellent chance to meet your child's teacher and see their classroom.
Please anticipate a challenging parking situation and carpool or walk if possible. I'm sure you'll remember from our Meet & Greet that it is warm in the Lake Grove Building - dress accordingly.

Social Emotional Learning
Dear Lake Grove Families,
Thank you for being part of our school community! The world is changing quickly and we want to do everything we can to help students be successful in school and in life.
We are excited to share that we will continue utilizing PurposeFull People, a Social Emotional Learning (SEL) program this school year. This program teaches skills that will help students be successful in all facets of their life journey.
We believe students should have safe and predictable places to learn where they feel included. Students should also have healthy and helpful connections with teachers and classmates. Further, they should experience learning that will help them tackle challenges inside and outside of school. PurposeFull People is more than a set of lessons. It is a partnership between schools and families to create a place where students feel like they belong and learn skills that will help them be the best they can be!
PurposeFull People has three main goals for students: Be Kind, Be Strong, and Be Well.
● Be Kind: Social skills like listening, friendship, solving conflicts, and leadership.
- These skills are taught alongside Empathy, Respect, & Cooperation
● Be Strong: Skills that help students focus, stay organized, and set goals.
- These skills are taught alongside Responsibility, Courage, & Perseverance
● Be Well: Skills that help students handle their emotions and deal with stress.
- These skills are taught alongside Gratitude, Honesty, & Creativity
We invite you to join us in this learning journey. We will send home letters about the skills and strengths being taught each month. Each newsletter will include some ways to build these skills at home, discussion starters, and fun challenges you can try with your family.
This journey forward is full of growth and opportunity! We cannot wait to partner with you in this work. Together, we will:
- Teach students how to build strong friendships
- Work together to solve problems, big and small
- Grow skills for life
- Become PurposeFull People
With sincere gratitude,
Wendy Post

New Application for School Volunteers
For the safety of children, volunteers are required to have an approved background check when volunteering in schools.
To help streamline compliance with state and school board policies, which require that all volunteers have background checks and knowledge of other board policies -- as well as state-mandated proof of vaccination (or a qualified exemption) -- we are introducing a new all-in-one volunteer application and approval process through ou Raptor Visitor Management System.
Submitting an online application initiates the background check process. Once submitted, applicants will receive an email upon approval of your background check and you will be given access through the onsite Raptor System at all schools. Please allow up to three weeks to process your approval.
Volunteers need to submit only one application for volunteering in all LOSD schools. Applications need to be submitted annually to capture changes in background checks, policies, and/or vaccination requirements.
Volunteer Application for LOSD
Thank you for applying promptly, and for your service to our students and schools. We are grateful for our volunteers.
City of Lake Oswego Seeking Your Feedback
The City of Lake Oswego is asking for your feedback on a number of topics, including pathways that impact accessibility to Lake Grove. Please weigh in on the City's surveys below:
- Share your feedback on the 2022 Pathway Program sites (Boca Ratan, Douglas Way, Hallinan Street, Lanewood Street/Douglas Circle). Questionnaires are open until September 11.
LOSD Beginning Strings & Elementary Orchestra
Registration for LOSD Beginning Strings and Elementary Orchestra is now open!
Please register by September 10th, 2022 to secure your seat! First come, first serve.
Visit the strings website at www.losdschools.org/domain/59 or contact Darian Todd,
Lake Oswego School District Elementary Strings Program Coordinator, email:toddd@loswego.k12.or.us
Arrival and Dismissal Routines
Thank you for being patient and considerate during arrival and dismissal. Safety is our top priority. Please do not arrive before 8am as there is no supervision until 8am.
Students will wait outside of the building, in designated areas, rain or shine until the first bell at 8:10 when they will be encouraged to walk to class. Parents need to say goodbye to students at the red gate. Students will be supervised by staff under the covered play area between 8:00-8:10 and as they walk to class until 8:20.
Drivers may not enter the parking lot until 2:30 and must continue circling the neighborhood streets if they arrive earlier than that. We cannot block through traffic by stopping on the streets. There will be no parking, except in special circumstances. Email Principal Knapp if you need to request a parking pass.
Please pull up as far as possible along the route map linked here and have a sign with your students’ first and last name and teacher’s name displayed in your passenger side front window or on the passenger side dash board at dismissal. (We will provide signs during the first week of school or you can make your own.)
If you are walking your child to/from school, please plan to say goodbye/meet them on the sidewalk by the red gate between the building and the field. Parents waiting to pick up walkers should wait in the parking spaces behind the silver fencing.
Be sure to communicate your regular go-home plans (and any changes) with your child’s teacher. After school teachers will walk students to the buses, to meet walking parents, or help them into cars for pick up.
Please also note our new traffic directions and crosswalk in the parking lot that are also indicated on the map linked above.
Champions is Hiring
We are excited to have Champions Learning Program joining the Lake Grove family, partnering with us to operate their Before and After School Program in our school. The enrollment, thus far, is more than double what was anticipated, so Champions is still needing to hire SEVERAL more staff members to ensure all enrolled families can be supported.
They have added large Cash Commitment Bonuses for staff hired between now and the start of school. In addition, they will provide 2 weeks of free tuition to a Champions family, for any referral hired. They even are offering donations to the Charity of your choice if you refer someone who is hired on to the Champions Team.
If you, or someone you know, loves connecting with children, this is a great Part Time Job with Full Time Benefits. Think about who you would recommend and trust with your own children - they might be the perfect person interested in working a few hours a day.
For more details on the above incentives, or to apply or send a referral, please reach out to the Area Manager, Stephanie Scanlon at stephanie.scanlon@discoverchampions.com
