Remote Preparedness Test Thursday
The DOE is conducting a simulation of its preparedness for remote learning days this Thursday, June 6th. This simulation is to ensure that the DOE system can handle the number of students that will log in simultaneously.
While Thursday is a non-attendance day for students, the DOE requests that all middle school students log on between 8:30 and 8:45AM and stay online until 8:55AM. Participation is completely optional. Check Operoo for detailed instructions.
MS 50 Lit Mag
Hot off the presses is the amazing first edition of MS 50 Lit Mag! The Lit Mag ELT worked all year to put together this collection of student work. Prepare to be blown away by fascinating bilingual YA and science fiction stories, poetry, and art from talented writers right here at MS 50! Bee Hive
We are proud to have launched a new partnership this spring with City Growers, a non-profit centered on youth education and urban farming. Since installing a bee hive on our roof this April, the honey bee population has grown tremendously! Starting this week, our students are getting a chance to see the parts of the hive first hand in our science lab as they learn about the importance of honey bees to our ecosystem.
Linked below is a video of our most recent hive-check which took place after dismissal last week. A few highlights from the video:
- They drank all their sugar water, which helped get them through all the early spring showers, when they can't leave the hive so much to forage.
- We now need hive tools to pry the boxes from each other to open the hive. This means the bees have been busy sealing every corner with propolis -- a sticky substance which protects the hive from intruders by sealing openings and smoothing cracks.
- You can see on some of the frames examples of bees festooning -- they hook their legs together when they are building out comb and in time of abundance to facilitate working together.
- At about the 4:50 mark, you can see the queen (with the blue dot) robust and busily inspecting and laying eggs.
- There are lots of babies and lots of pollen, which shows our bees are healthy and happy!
