Elementary Transfer Request Guidelines
LOSD recently clarified guidelines for requests to attend an elementary school outside of your residency school boundaries. Guidelines require that elementary students must apply for a transfer each year, and transfers are granted for individual students on a space-availability basis.
This year, with possible new boundaries re-balancing elementary schools, available space may change at your student’s current school. Space availability is determined by each grade’s teacher-to-student ratio and school capacity targets set by the School Board.
If space is available, following is the criteria in order of how transfer requests are prioritized:
1. Student was moved by LOSD requirement, i.e. kindergarten overflow, and wishes to remain at the school
2. Student has tenure at the school (weight given to number of years at the school)
3. Student is the sibling of a student opting into a program (Spanish Immersion) at the requested school
4. Student has tenure at school and family recently moved outside of resident boundary
5. Student is making a transfer request for the first time
6. Student is new to the district
Please note, students previously placed due to hardship (as defined by Oregon Department of Education) and students who volunteered to transfer from Oak Creek to Lake Grove or Forest Hills as part of the “permanent transfer” appeal made in 2019 are guaranteed a spot at their current school. Also, students who are the siblings of students enrolled in a program (Access, Pathways, Delta) will remain at the same school with their siblings.
All transfer requests received between Jan. 22 and July 1, 2020 will be assessed using the criteria above, and all applicants will be notified by July 31, 2020, once resident students have enrolled through the summer. Transfer requests received after July 1, 2020 will be considered in the order in which they are received.
Any changes made to current boundaries will be decided by the School Board at the end of April.
Continuing to Monitor Coronavirus (COVID-19)
The 2019-20 flu season has been complicated by recent global reports of a novel coronavirus (COVID-19). This is a respiratory illness that can spread from person to person. Common symptoms of COVID-19 in an infected person include a fever, cough, and shortness of breath or difficulty breathing. Although there have been reported cases of COVID-19 globally, to date there have been no confirmed cases in Oregon.
LOSD is continuing to monitor the situation and obtain updates from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Oregon Health Authority, and local health officials. LOSD has a pandemic flu plan that was developed during the H1N1 outbreak in 2009. We are working on updating that plan using the newest guidelines provided by the CDC. We will keep you informed of any new developments impacting our school community.
Student Investment Account Draft Grant Presented
LOSD presented its 118-page Student Success Act (SSA) report to the School Board Monday. The report proposes using Student Investment Account grant funds from SSA to lower teacher-to-student ratios in kindergarten, first, sixth and ninth grade; change the middle school schedule for fewer transitions; and provide more mental health supports, among other impacts expected to improve student success, particularly for students who have historically experienced academic disparities.
The School Board will review the grant and discuss feedback at the next board working session before LOSD submits it to the state. The report may be read in the board packet of materials, and a presentation overview is available on the losdschools.org.
Unified Championship School Status
Special Olympics' Unified Sports program brings together a combination of students impacted with disabilities (athletes) partnered with non impacted students (partners). To offer the programs at a school, Special Olympics requires enough athletes that would qualify. LOSD is fortune to be able to offer the Unified Sports program at Lake Oswego Junior High and Lake Oswego High because our schools have enough athletes to help generate a full team.
In their first year, the Lake Oswego Middle School Unified Sports teams participated in soccer and are deep into their basketball season. These students, staff and athletes reached "Unified Championship School" status, which means they met criteria in the areas of sports, leadership and whole school engagement. Congratulations to the athletes, partners, coaches, students, staff, Principal Kevin Mills and Unified Sports faculty facilitator Kasie Hansen.
Plans are in place to start Unified Sports at Lake Oswego High School next year. Athletes will participate in soccer and basketball. Students currently participate in the cross country, swimming and track, which are full-inclusion sports.
Interested in getting involved? If so, consider serving on one of the district and board-appointed advisory committees. As part of its continuous efforts to increase communication with the public and to provide for citizen involvement, the School Board appoints advisory committees to consider matters of district-wide importance. Committees meet monthly, September through May.
