Westfield Principal Kristen Ulery
Westfield families:
We are looking forward to the PTC Fall Fest tomorrow from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. The event will be moved inside if the weather doesn't cooperate, so we hope to see you there, rain or shine!
Don't forget to sign up for parent teacher conferences on October 10 and 11. Teachers emailed links to sign up online. If you are unable to sign up for a time, please contact your child's teacher to make arrangements.

Picking up bus riders at school
If your child normally rides the bus and you will be picking up, you must call the office in advance to indicate the you would like your child pulled from the bus line and sent out with the walker/pick up line. Parents may not take kids off the bus at school without checking in at the office.
Bus supervisors are not authorized to release kids directly from the bus. If you are not able to contact the office ahead of time to have your child removed from the bus line before they board the bus, the supervisor will have to hold your child until you have checked in at the office for them to authorize the release. While we understand that it may be more convenient for you to just walk up and pull your child off of the bus, that interferes with the dismissal systems we use to ensure a safe dismissal for everyone.

BMX bike assembly
On Monday, students attended an assembly with Matt Wilhelm, a BMX bike National Champion. He shared a positive message and encouraged the kids to be kind to everyone. He also demonstrated a lot of his difficult bike tricks and talked about how he had to work hard and practice a lot to be able to do those tricks.
First-grade reading dogs
This week was our first reading dogs visit of the year. Mrs. Skriba's class went first, and students had a chance to read to one of three therapy dogs who visited Westfield. Throughout the year, all of our first graders will have a chance to read to the therapy dogs.
Respect awards
Each month our SEL curriculum, Character Strong, has character traits that are the focus of activities. This year, we are going to recognize students from each grade level that demonstrate the character trait of the month.
September's focus was respect, so this morning, we recognized students who demonstrated exceptional respect for others throughout the month. Those students were called to the office during morning announcements to receive a certificate and a prize. We are very proud of how our students have demonstrated respect this month!
Parent-teacher conferences October 10 and 11
Parent teacher conferences will be held October 10 and 11. If you did not receive the link to sign up for a conference, please contact your child's teacher.
Donuts with Dudes on October 4
Don't forget Donuts with Dudes is Friday, October 4, from 8 to 8:30 a.m. This is a chance to spend time together over donuts and learn about the Watch D.O.G.S. (Dads of Great Students) program, which will begin soon. Watch D.O.G.S. is a great opportunity for dads and father-figures to spend a half day at school with their kids.
Parent Series: The new science on ADHD (September 30)
At noon and 7 p.m. on Monday, September 30, psychiatrist and author Dr. Edward Hallowell will explore the varied forms of ADHD takes, from hyperactivity to daydreaming, and dispel common myths. Westfield is Celebrating OAKtober!
The Westfield Garden Club is collecting acorns the entire month of October. If your family has access to acorns, please help us celebrate by collecting and donating them to Westfield. The viable acorns will be used to grow and care for new oak trees. Please be sure to only provide acorns from trees that your family owns.
Oaks represent strength and stature and are historically significant to both the Chicago region and Illinois, evident in the fact that the white oak is the Illinois state tree. Majestic oaks create a sense of awe and wonder. These trees work for us by cleaning our air and water, reducing ambient air temperature, and decreasing our use of energy. But oaks need our help: around the world, more than one-third of all oak species are threatened with extinction.
OAKtober is a time to celebrate oaks and everything that they do for people, as well as to promote the planting and care of these important trees. Every individual, organization, community, park district, forest preserve, and public or private landowner or manager can play an important role in celebrating oaks and oak ecosystems across Illinois throughout the month of October.
Please bring acorns in a bag to Mr. Mennecke in the LMC. If you have any questions, please email Mr. Mennecke at kmennecke@ccsd89.org
Please donate acorns to Westfield in a bag and make sure you own the tree or you have permission to take the acorns.
