Nurse's News
February is American Heart Health Month
Taking care of your heart is one of the most important ways to feel great and stay healthy. The small, heart-healthy decisions you make each day can lead to big benefits, helping you live a longer, happier life.
Did you know the heart is a muscle about the size of your fist? It works hard every day to pump blood filled with oxygen and nutrients throughout your body while also helping to remove waste. For school-aged kids, the heart beats anywhere from 60 to 118 times per minute when resting—and even faster when you're active. That’s some serious hard work keeping your body going!
Exercise is the best way to keep the heart strong and healthy. Kids can stay active in fun ways every day! They can turn up their favorite music and have a dance party, or grab some friends for a game of tag. Going for a bike ride or jumping rope are great ways to get moving, while playing sports like soccer or basketball can keep them active and build teamwork. At home, they can create their own obstacle courses or follow along with a kid-friendly yoga video for some stretching and relaxation.
One easy step to healthier eating is to include fruits and vegetables in every meal and snack. Whether fresh, frozen, canned, or dried, all forms of fruits and veggies count! Plus, the more colorful your plate, the better—so try adding a rainbow of colors to your meals to nourish both your body and your life.
Preventing the Spread of Germs This Winter
Wash hands frequently: Use soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after coughing, sneezing, or touching shared surfaces.
Use hand sanitizer: If soap and water aren’t available, use a hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol.
Cover coughs and sneezes: Always cough or sneeze into your elbow or a tissue, then throw the tissue away and wash your hands.
Avoid touching your face: Try to keep hands away from your eyes, nose, and mouth to prevent germs from entering your body.
Stay home when sick: Keep children home if they show signs of illness, such as fever, cough, or sore throat, until they are symptom-free for 24 hours.
Disinfect frequently touched surfaces: Clean doorknobs, light switches, and other commonly used surfaces regularly to reduce germs.
Avoid close contact: Limit close contact with people who are sick.
If your child continues to appear fatigued, pale, lacks appetite, struggles with solid foods, or just doesn’t seem like themselves, PLEASE KEEP THEM HOME from school. Some viral illnesses may require more time for full recovery before your child is ready to return. Sending your child to school to “see if they improve” risks exposing other students and staff to contagious illnesses. This can spread the illness to classmates, their siblings, and family members.
If your child had any of the following symptoms today, please keep them home
Fever over 100 degrees (must be fever free for 24 hours without the use of tylenol or motrin to return to school)
Vomiting and/or diarrhea (if your child has had any vomiting or diarrhea within the past 24 hours, they should not return to school)
Diagnosis of communicable disease such as strep throat or conjunctivitis (if diagnosed with a communicable disease and prescribed antibiotics, your child must not return to school until they have been on antibiotics for at least 24 hours)
A doctor’s note is required if a student is out five (5) or more consecutive days. If an absence is due to a communicable disease or a bone fracture, a doctor’s note is required the day the student returns to school and should include any recess/gym limitations.
If you have any questions or concerns about your child's health, or if you're unsure whether they should attend school, please don't hesitate to contact me.
