WELCOME TO THE 2024-2025 SCHOOL YEAR AT BMS!
I hope you've all had a wonderful summer break! As we prepare for the new school year, I’m excited to share some updates about our school’s ongoing renovation project. We’re nearing the end of Phase 1 of our two-year renovation journey, and I can’t wait for you to see the incredible changes that await you.
When you arrive, you’ll notice a fresh, modern look on the 2nd and 3rd floors, including updated classrooms designed to enhance your learning experience. We’ve also created a brand-new Maker Space, where creativity and innovation will thrive, and a redesigned Media Center that will soon be the hub of exploration and learning. Although the Media Center won’t be fully completed when you return, we’re adding all the final touches to make it perfect—with all the bells and whistles!
But that’s not all—you might not see it, but you’ll definitely feel it! Our entire building now features a new heating and cooling system, ensuring a comfortable environment all year round. Plus, each classroom is now equipped with the latest technology to support your learning in the most up-to-date way possible.
As we get ready to welcome you back, here are a few things to help you prepare:
- **Supply Lists:** Be sure to check school supply lists linked below, or on our school website. Lists are specific to your grade level. Having the right materials will set you up for success from day one!
- **Schedules:** Your class schedules will be available online a week before school starts. You will get a final copy of your schedule in your Advisory on the first day of school.
- **Incoming 6th Grade & ONLY NEW 7th & 8th grade student open house:** We will be hosting an open house for 6th grade & any new 7th & 8th grade students to BMS on Wednesday, August 28th from 9-11:30am. This is a great opportunity for new students to get familiar with the new spaces.
- **Back-to-School Events:** Mark your calendars for our upcoming Learning Conference (open house format) and Family Picnic on September 12th, from 4:00-7:00 pm. It’s a chance to reconnect with friends, meet your teachers, and see the fantastic improvements we’ve made to the school. 6th graders and new 7th and 8th graders to BMS, please join us for our open house on August 28th 9:00 am-11:30 am.
- **Transportation:** If you take the bus, you should receive your busing information by email. If you are new to the district and have not received bussing information, please contact transportation at busquestions@district279.og or call at 763-391-7244. With the new school year comes some changes, so make sure to review them. If you drop off your student, please review the traffic pattern in this newsletter. The parking lots are very busy, always drive slowly and watch for students who are walking to school from both BMS and PCSH.
We’ve been working hard to make this the best school year yet, and I can’t wait for you to experience all the amazing updates we’ve made. Get ready for an exciting year full of learning, growth, and new opportunities.
See you soon!

2024-25 SCHOOL SUPPLY LISTS
IMPORTANT BACK TO SCHOOL FORMS TO COMPLETE
Please make sure you complete all the necessary Back to School Forms before September 3rd.
TRANSPORTATION
Bussing information will be emailed to families the week of August 26th. If you have any questions regarding your students transportation please go to https://www.district279.org/services/transportation or call 763-391-7244.
If you are driving your student to school, please see the map below for important information on how to safely navigate our busy parking areas. In order to keep traffic flowing, cars must enter on the north end of the tennis courts. All other entrances will be blocked off. There are a lot of cars and buses during our arrival and dismissal times throughout the school year. We ask that you be mindful of pedestrians and other drivers. Also, please do not block other cars from getting through if you are waiting.
PLEASE NOTE: THERE IS NO STOPPING OR PARKING IN CROSSWALK AREAS, EVER! It is actually illegal. Vehicles must always yield to pedestrians in crosswalks. This is so important so our students and staff can arrive to school and enter the building safely.
Students may enter the building at 7:50AM. If they arrive before that time they will need to wait outside.
EDUCATIONAL BENEFITS
https://www.district279.org/services/nutrition-services
The food and Nurtition Program provides high quality, nutritious breakfast and lunches free of cost to families. Offering students fresh and tasty choices is important! all Minnesota K-12 students attending school in person will have one free breakfast and lunch available to them each academic school year due to the state's recently passed Free School Meals for Kids bill.
NOTE: A la carte items outside of a complete meal will still incur a cost (milk will incur a cost unless taken as a part of a school meal).
Meals are prepared onsite in each school kitchen with an emphasis on baking with whole grain flour, along with serving a variety of colorful fruits and vegetables to encourage healthy eating.
The website and information and to apply for Educational Benefits is at https://www.district279.org/services/nutrition-services
Everyone is encouraged to apply for the Educational Benefits as it will not only help our school funding but may qualify you for reduced activity fees and much more. Please apply today.
BMS LEARNING CONFERENCES (OPEN HOUSE FORMAT)
The BMS Learning Conferences will be held on Thursday, September 12th from 4:00-7:00pm at BMS. This is a chance for families to meet staff, check out Park Center sport activity opportunities, connect with representatives from our parent group PACT, and much more. There will also be hotdogs on the grill in the cafeteria for you to enjoy a meal. We hope you will be able to join us this evening.
PARENT/STUDENT HANDBOOK CALENDAR
Families should be receiving a hard copy of our important Parent/Student Handbook Calendar in the mail soon. Please be sure you keep this throughout the school year and refer to it for important dates as well as school expectations and policies.
IMPORTANT REMINDERS
As we begin a new school year, we would appreciate your help in reminding your student(s) of the following:
· Cell phones are to be turned off and kept in student lockers during the school day. Parent/
Guardians needing to get hold of their student during the school day should call the office. If a students phone is confiscated a parent will be notified each time.
· Personal headphones and ear buds are to be kept at home or in student lockers during the school day.
· Students should arrive on time at school each and every day. Doors open at 7:50 and class begins at 8:10am.
· Students who become ill - If your child does not feel well, has a fever of 100.4 or greater, vomiting or diarrhea they must stay home until they are symptom free for 24 hours without the use of medication.
· Please do not send an ill child to school. They will not be able to learn well and could cause other students/staff to become ill.
If your student becomes ill while in school, they are to report to the health office. Our nurse will assess the situation and contact you to pick your student up if they cannot return to class. Students are not to call home for someone to pick up. The nurse will do this. All ill students are required to sign-out through the health office when leaving school due to illness.
We do appreciate all you do to support your student(s) and Brooklyn Middle STEAM School.
