FAFSA & ORSAA Completion

Seniors, have you learned if you will receive FREE grant funds to use for your education? Completing your FAFSA or ORSAA will help you. Do you need assistance getting yours done? Remember, you must do one of these to receive the Oregon Promise for use at an Oregon community college next year. Come to the C&CC to learn what steps to take to get your financial aid.

When you have completed your FAFSA or ORSAA, come get your candy bar to celebrate!

SBHS FAFSA Completion Rate: 32% or 121/374

Should I do the Oregon Promise? YES!

The Oregon Promise is awarded to students who:

submit their application by June 1, 2022,
have a 2.5 cumulative GPA by the end of senior year
have completed their FAFSA or ORSAA
and plan to attend an Oregon Community College.

By meeting these important steps, a student will have between $2000-$8000 for free.

Have you completed your application? ALL seniors should complete the OP, regardless of their plans for the future. Its a great back-up plan.

Remember, this is a one-time-only opportunity. If you don't do the application this year, you CANNOT do it again later.

Volunteers Needed

SBHS is once again allowing volunteers in the building!

If you would like to volunteer in our College & Career Center, please let us know. No experience needed.

Volunteers will be working directly with kids to plan their future. The ASPIRE program uses adult volunteers to be "another shoulder to lean on" for kids finding their path. Volunteers will learn how to work on college applications, creating resumes, financial aid applications and generally being a support to students. (You will have plenty of help from the C&CC staff.)

Volunteers will be asked to complete a GBSD volunteer application and will be required to follow district guidelines that include: wearing masks, be vaccinated, and checking in at the main office.

Share your GREAT news--Report Scholarships to the C&CC

Seniors, have you been offered or accepted a scholarship? If so, please email Patty or stop by to share the good news. Accepted scholarships are entered into your graduation program. (This makes mom and dad happy!) Scholarship offers, even if you don't choose to use them, are added to your senior class total. Let us know what you've received. Keep up the great work. Bruin Pride.

Engineers' Week is Coming! Feb. 22-25

Each year, SBHS been invited to take a small group of students to witness engineering at work here in Portland. This year, the "field trips" will be done virtually. This is actually a great thing as we are now not limited to the number of students who can participate.

The College & Career Center will be hosting engineering events all day during the week. Join us for some hands-on learning, bring your chrome book and ear buds and we will provide some snacks to nourish your learning brains.

Watch for sign ups soon and list of specific topics from which to choose.

Using Schoolinks to make a plan for the future--Starting NOW

Schoolinks.com is the search engine SBHS uses to explore colleges and careers.

Students, and their parents, can browse and learn about a student's preferences for their future.

Students log on to their Schoolinks account by using their SBHS gmail as the user name and their school ID# as the password.

We encourage you to take a look around. It's never too early to start exploring options.

What is Nepris, Oregon Connections?

Nepris, Oregon Connections pairs industry professionals with students in the classroom. Students experience real-world learning from specialists in a wide variety of careers. Students can participate in virtual career learning with industry members working within Science Technology, Engineering, and Math fields. Or we have access to over 13,000 pre-recorded videos that we can target an area of interest.

Should Students Volunteer?

Yes, Yes...for so many reasons, YES!

Why should kids volunteer?

Volunteering helps kids to see the world through a broader lens and creates areas of interest that may be new and exciting to them.
Getting involved in our community is a great way to enhance a resume for employment, college applications and scholarships.
Students meet new friends outside their normal circles.
Meeting people creates great contacts for future jobs, connections to experts in a chosen field and ways to learn more about areas of interest.

How do I find a place to volunteer?

Get involved in our community service groups like Key Club, National Honor Society, MEChA, etc. These groups offer regular volunteer opportunities.
Find a place where your interests align with a particular business or group. (Oregon Humane Society, Snow Cap, My Father's House.)
Look for places close to your home so that you will find it easier to attend events and opportunities.
Check out the list of local volunteer sites shown on the SBHS College & Career Center's website.

Once you've found a way to volunteer, what do you do next?

Record the hours spent volunteering on an activities chart/resume.
Document the time with pictures, certificates, letters of recommendation from your supervisor. Save these items for future use in applications.

NW Youth Careers Expo

The 18th annual NW Youth Careers Expo will take place virtually on March 15, 2022. The Expo is held from 9:00 am to 1:30 pm.

The annual Careers Expo is the Northwest’s premier career exploration experience. They welcome students from 75+ high schools in Oregon and Southwest Washington to attend the Expo, as well as 195+ exhibitors representing the state's leading employers and postsecondary partners. The Careers Expo shows students the region's amazing diversity of career opportunities, along with the skills and education needed for those jobs.

The nonprofit Portland Workforce Alliance organizes the event. The Expo's goals are to connect employers to their future workforce and help students make informed, inspired decisions about their education after high school -- whether they choose a four-year university, community college, or apprenticeship training center.

All SBHS students can participate in this event. We welcome them to join LindaLee in the media center to access the Expo on their Chromebook (headphones are mandatory). They can attend all presentations or for only one period on March 15th. Students will be excused from their class to attend, but the work in the classes will need to be completed. What Do You Want to Be When You Grow Up?

We have all heard that question. When you were little, that question was fun to answer. No pressure to really decide. We are almost done with the first semester, and we will slide into June 2022 very quickly! Can I help you answer that question so you can make a career plan?

FIRST OPTION

I can offer the ASVAB Career Exploration Program test on Friday, February 11th at 11:30 am. This free, private, test is the most thorough career interest test we have available. It is given here at SBHS, to be followed up with a personal career planning appointment that will be held after the test. Students will have access to the career planning website for 2 years!

ANOTHER OPTION

Students are welcome to come into the College & Career Center to talk about their career options. I can help guide them to a career plan and give them some direction to the training needed. It is also possible to set up virtual mentor appointments with community members who work in the field they are interested in. ( I am present in this meeting)

The sooner a student comes in for help to explore careers, the more prepared they are for their senior year and the plans that lay beyond high school.
