Eagle News and Notes
April 2025
Spring is here!
Spring is finally here. Some days it may not feel like it, but there are signs about that show it is. The biggest sign are our spring sports. Some days they make it outside and others they are forced inside due to rain or cold!
In the classroom, our students are doing some great things. Many examples are talked about in this newsletter.
We have also just finished the 3rd quarter, so grade cards will be in the mail, if not by spring break, during spring break. With that in mind, please note that the office will be closed on Monday, March 31 and the morning only of April 1. Otherwise, Mrs. Eaton will be in the office - unless something unforeseen comes up.
Have a great spring break, and hopefully everyone comes back rested and ready to finish the year strong!
GO EAGLES!!!
Eastwood HS Concert Band
The Eastwood HS Concert Band earned a I Superior rating in Class B at the Ohio Music Education Association Large Group Band Adjudicated Event held March 7th at Sylvania Southview High School. Eastwood received 3 Superior ratings on prepared pieces, and a Superior rating in sight reading. This qualifies the Band for state competition on April 26 at Findlay High School. The Eastwood HS Concert Band is under the direction of Brian Myers and Jonathan Roode.
Good Luck at State!
One Step Ahead
The Eastwood One Step Ahead Club earned second place in the Wood County Suicide Prevention Coalition's Project Prom contest. Participating schools were tasked with creating a video addressing the prompt, 'How do healthy relationships impact mental health?' The club's success resulted in a $500 prize, which will be allocated to After Prom activities.
Spanish
Spanish 1 students recreated the "Castells" tradition of Tarragona, Spain, as they used a variety of materials to create the tallest and most complicated tower this week in our classroom. Though disappointed they couldn't TRULY recreate the HUMAN towers that are built in Tarragona, they were excited to be able to participate in small groups to create something unique out of different materials. Students were also excited about the prospect of winning the 1 dozen donuts! A unique experience that fostered collaboration, communication, idea sharing, and problem solving. More than 1 castell came crashing down multiple times, but no students were injured as part of the process. Thank you to Mrs. Cutway for judging both classes' castells.
Spanish 2 students practiced their real-world speaking skills in February as they attended lunch at El Zarape, completely ordering in Spanish! After a couple weeks of practice, the students were assessed on their ordering skills, as well as their ability to maintain a conversation in between ordering and eating. As always, our Eagles represented themselves very well and received many compliments from the wait staff. Thank you again to David and the staff at El Zarape - who dedicate themselves to speaking ONLY Spanish with my students every year when we do this!
Spanish 3 is currently studying a little known festival from Sevilla, Spain known as "Las Fallas". Held every march it coincides with the Feast of St. Joseph, the carpenter and originated with the carpenters of the village throwing away their old scraps of wood and burning them in a massive bonfire. This practice symbolized saying goodbye to winter and welcome to spring. This evolved into a neighborhood competition with each building their own massive monument known as a "falla" - celebrating for 4 days and then burning them all down on March 19.
Spanish 4 tried their hand at Flamenco dancing earlier this week with some YouTube tutorials that explain the vocabulary and movements necessary to dance like a flamenco professional. This is an ongoing part of our "Art in Europe and Latin America" unit that began with discussing prominent Latin American and European Hispanic artists, their styles of art and the unique life experiences they had that influenced their art. In the "Baile" (dance) portion of this unit, we are looking at the historically beautiful and significant flamenco music alongside the more contemporary Reggaeton. All agreed that all the intricacies of flamenco took a lot more coordination than most of us have!
Blood Drive
On Friday, May 9, our People, Inc will be hosting an American Red Cross Blood Drive in the high school gymnasium. If you are interested in giving, please contact Mrs. Sims at ssims@eastwoodschools.org so she can sign you up for a time slot.
UF ESOH 100 - Environmental Science
The UFESOH 100 class (Environmental Science) received a $500 grant from the Northwestern Water and Sewer District for water quality testing supplies. This is the 3rd year in a row they have received a grant for the work they do in their class! Congratulations!
UF BIOL 201 (Anatomy)
On April 14, the UF BIOL 201 - Anatomy- class will be visiting the University of Findlay Cadaver and Pharmacology Labs. On May 16, they will visit the University of Toledo Cadaver Lab. This is a great experience for the students to see things they have been studying all year!
From the School Nurse!
With all the illness going around, and some of them keeping students out multiple days, please take a look at this and keep it in mind when debating about sending your student to school.

Final Forms
Please make sure you and your student update Final Forms if you have not already done so!
So, why do our Penta students need to do this? For many reasons, the most important of which, is to assure that we have the most up-to-date contact information for you for both the school and transportation. We will be sending you things via the postal service and Final Forms throughout the school year and want to assure we have all the proper information. Being out of the building does not mean you are not still an Eagle! Also, if your student is in the building for any reason, then having emergency medical information is crucial, should something happen that would require it.
So, if you are among those who regularly get emails from Mrs. Jody Eaton regarding Final Forms, please go into Final Forms and assure that you and your student have completed and signed off on what needs to be done! You can also go to the school's website (www.eastwoodschools.org), click on the Parent tab at the top of the page and find a link to Final Forms there.
Thank you in advance for assure that this is completed!
Senior Immunizations
Meningitis is an inflammation of the protective layer around the brain and spinal cord. This disease can be fatal or leave those who survive it with permanent disabilities. The meningococcal vaccine is the best way to avoid meningitis.
Section 3313.671 of the Ohio Revised Code states that students who do not provide documentation of this immunization are subject to exclusion from school.
If you have any questions or concerns regarding immunizations, please contact Dannelle Sutton, RN, School Nurse at dsutton@eastwoodschools.org or call the Ohio Department of Health Immunization Program hotline at 800-282-0546, or visit the ODH website.

Medication
Finals Forms has provided some confusion in regards to medication for our students. If your student will need to take medication at school, be it prescription or over the counter, you will need to print out the appropriate form on Final Forms, complete it and send it in to school. You will also need to provide a bottle of medication in its original container. We do not have medication (Tylenol, Advil, etc) to give to students.
If you have any questions, do not hesitate to call the office and speak to the secretaries.
Free and Reduced Applications
Fees - IMPORTANT REMINDER
This is a policy that is set by the board and the secretaries will be adhering to it. If you have a balance, please make arrangements to pay the fees via PaySchoolCentral with a credit card, or in the office with exact cash or a check.
If you would like a copy of the policy, please contact the office and Mrs. Eaton or Mrs. Brown will be happy to provide it to you.
For our families of Seniors: It is also part of board policy that Seniors will not be issued their diplomas until all fees are paid and community service is completed. If you need to set up a payment plan, it is suggested you do this early in the year to ease the burden in May. Please contact Mrs. Jody Eaton to do so at jeaton@eastwoodschools.org or call her at the office at 419-833-3611.
